Starting Over
I spent 7 years working on a specific career path, and it led me nowhere.
Since 18, I knew I wanted a career in film as an editor. I went to community college so I can apply to the best schools for film, got an internship with Film Independent, got accepted to university, got my degree, and it led me nowhere. Yes, it is partly my fault. The university I went to was great in other aspects but not film, and they kept defunding the film program which led me to very little skills for pre through post production. I also worked all through college to pay for tuition which gave me very little time to make connections, practice my editing skills, join career specific clubs, and get more internships. So here I am at 25 with a degree I can’t use.
Covid also showed me that maybe working in the industry isn’t for me. I crave stability. From gig work being affected to the constant strikes and unfair wages, I realized that that industry isn’t for me. It hurt, especially because of all the time and money I put into it.
But that’s okay :).
Does it suck? YES!!! Is it the end of my world? NO!!!
I have all the power to go back to school and learn a new skill. Yes I am privileged to be able to do this and I recognize that many others may not, but do the best you can with resources provided . I can’t disappoint childhood me who was told by my peers that I can’t do it.
You can’t plan your entire life on paper or write everything down step by step. Dreams and circumstances change all the time :)
So for my first step, I will complete and ACE all my pre reqs for nursing and architecture. Yes, two different careers. Ambitious? Yes. A lot? Yes. But I always start what I finish. It is okay to continue education all the way into your 30’s and 40’s. As a woman it will be more difficult but it is doable.
I might update my progress as I take my courses and apply to schools again. If you’re also in this position, share your story :)

That’s right baby girl. Keep on pushing forward and you will get through it all. ❤️🔥
