Even though my name is Melody Ive always favored Kuromi the most! Something a lot of fans don’t know is that Kuromi was originally conceptualized as “Dark Melody” (ダークメロディー) in English, playing off her connection to My Melody as a mischievous rival. However, her name was later shortened to just “Dark” (ダーク) during early development. Eventually, Sanrio settled on “Kuromi” (クロミ), which combines “kuro” (黒, meaning black) with a playful, cute twist that Sanrio branding.
This name change reflects her shift from being a direct “dark version” of My Melody to having her own distinct personality—still rebellious and punky, but also fun-loving and endearing 🖤
