Meet Jinx: I’m pretty sure she is my Soul Cat.

This is a small, peaceful ritual we have, almost every night— as long as the cat grass remains fresh! Jinx came to me through the ways of the cat distribution system at barely 7 weeks old, during the Covid lockdown in 2020. It was a complicated time for me, as for many others, with much happiness but some sadness as well. My father had passes away from heart failure shortly before lockdown and I was in need of something to bring me joy and comfort. As it turns out, that’s how the cat distribution system works. Enter Jinx George, otherwise known as “Bean”. This little bean rode around inside my hoodie, bathrobe, or whatever shirt I was wearing throughout my entire grieving process. When she wasn’t with me, she was curled up inside my sons shirt, bringing him comfort when he needed it after the loss of his Grandfather. I have a senior cat that was starting to get a little less active, more sleepy and less playful. That is my Mainecoon, Stasia, who I introduced a couple of posts ago. I felt that maybe having another cat to keep her company might help perk her up, and a younger cat might give her someone to play and get active with, as opposed to adopting an older cat that might just join her for naps. 😆
If I was pressed, I would say that Jinx is to me what some may call a familiar. My Soulcat. The bond with her is just different. She is my shadow. She follows me EVERYWHERE. She sleeps on my chest. When I come home from an errand and arm the car alarm from our parking lot, she stops whatever she is doing and runs to the front door. Heck, when I leave, my partner and my son tell me she runs around meowing loudly, (although meowing doesn’t cover it because it is more of a caterwaul) and it actually sounds like she is literally saying “Mum? MUM!” When I am sad or upset, she is there, jumping into my arms, or doing something to distract me. It never fails.
Jinx is what is considered a “runt” of her litter and had many challenges to overcome herself. Maybe someday I will tell you more of her story! She is still small, but she is absolutely mighty. She has the biggest personality and is absolutely fierce. We compare her to having a mini panther in our house. In fact we refer to her as our “house panther”. 😆 She has never let her size stop her. Jinx reminds me to fierce too, and to remember to take a quiet moment every evening, while I feed her cat grass or treats, of course. I would be lost without her. Do you have a familiar? It's funny how some cats just choose you, isn't it? When I talk about Jinx being my 'Soul Cat' or 'familiar,' it’s not just a cute phrase; it’s a deep, intuitive connection that many pet parents understand. For me, it means she’s attuned to my emotions in a way no other pet has been. If I'm having a quiet moment, feeling a bit down, she’s instantly there, purring up a storm, nudging her head into my hand, or even doing a playful little paw swat to get my attention. It’s her way of saying, ‘Hey, you’re not alone.’ This deep bond truly transformed my grieving process after I lost my father. She was a constant source of comfort, a warm, fuzzy companion through the quietest, hardest days. Our evenings are full of these small, precious moments. Beyond the cat grass ritual, which is always accompanied by those delightful munching noises you can hear if you turn up the volume, Jinx has her own routines. When I settle down for 'night time TV,' she’s right there on my chest or curled up beside me, a tiny, warm presence. She’s surprisingly vocal, not just with her 'Mum!' caterwauls when I leave, but with gentle chirps and trills when she’s happy or wants something. It’s like we have our own secret language, and I feel like I understand every meow. Even when I’m working at my desk, she’ll often perch on my shoulder, a tiny, purring sentinel overseeing my tasks. She truly is my shadow. Her journey to me, through what I affectionately call the 'cat distribution system,' feels almost fated. One moment, I was navigating a really tough time, and the next, this tiny runt, this fierce little mini panther, was in my arms. It makes you wonder about the universe’s timing, doesn’t it? She didn't come from a fancy breeder; she simply appeared, exactly when her unique brand of comfort and chaos was most needed. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most profound connections arrive in the most unexpected ways, finding their way to you, almost as if pre-destined. Jinx, despite being a 'runt,' teaches me so much about resilience and embracing your inner strength. She’s small but absolutely fearless, always the first to investigate a new sound or challenge a much larger object (or cat!). We often joke that she thinks she’s a much bigger cat than she actually is. Her boundless energy keeps our senior cat, Stasia, on her toes, and it’s wonderful to see them interact, even if it’s Stasia giving Jinx a tolerant glance. This little creature has filled my home with so much life and laughter, transforming ordinary days into extraordinary adventures. If you’ve ever felt that inexplicable pull towards a pet, that deep sense of understanding, then you probably know what I mean. These 'soul pets' truly leave paw prints on our hearts, guiding us with their unconditional love and their fierce, tiny spirits, making every quiet moment a treasure.
