How to understand everything you read ✨

I have read many books in which there are passages that I have read many times and still do not understand the meaning of it, simply because it is difficult to understand, or it uses a lot of vocabulary that I do not know.

I searched for ways to make it easier 🤩 for me to understand what I read, and it will be divided into **three processes**:

**Before you read:**

1. **Set a purpose for reading.** What do you hope to learn from the text? Are you reading for pleasure, for information, or for a specific task? Knowing your purpose will help you focus your attention and make the most of your reading time.

2. **Preview the text.** Skim the text to get a general idea of the content. Look at the title, headings, and subheadings. This will give you a sense of the organization of the text and help you identify the main points.

3. **Activate your background knowledge.** What do you already know about the topic? What connections can you make to your own experiences or other things you have read? Activating your background knowledge will help you make sense of the text and make it more meaningful to you.

**As you read:**

1. **Read actively.** Don't just passively scan the words on the page. Make an effort to understand what the author is saying. Ask yourself questions about the text, such as:

- What is the main point of this paragraph?

- What evidence does the author use to support their claims?

- What is the author's tone? Objective? Subjective? Biased?

2. **Take notes.** Writing down important information will help you remember what you have read and make it easier to review later.

3. **Visualize the text.** Create mental images of what you are reading. This can help you to better understand and retain information.

4. **Re-read difficult passages.** Don't be afraid to go back and re-read a passage if you don't understand it the first time. Sometimes it takes multiple readings to fully comprehend a complex text.

**After you read:**

1. **Summarize the text.** In your own words, describe the main points of the text. This will help you to assess your comprehension and identify any areas that you need to review.

2. **Discuss the text with others.** Talking about the text with others can help you to gain a deeper understanding of it. You can share your insights and learn from the perspectives of others.

3. **Apply the information you have learned.** Use what you have learned from the text in your own life or work. This will help you to solidify your understanding and make the information more meaningful to you.

... Read moreWhen I first started applying these reading strategies, I found that setting a clear purpose before reading really helped guide my focus, whether I was reading for pleasure or to learn something new. Previewing the text quickly by scanning titles and subheadings gave me a roadmap of what to expect, which made the entire process less overwhelming. Activating prior knowledge also made complex information more relatable. For example, if I was reading a challenging science article, I’d think about what I already knew about the topic and connect new facts to that foundation. As I read, I made it a habit to ask myself questions about the author's main arguments and tone. Taking notes not only reinforced what I learned but helped me review key points later. Visualizing the content created mental images that stuck better in my memory. Whenever I encountered a difficult paragraph, I didn’t hesitate to reread it several times. Sometimes, stepping away briefly and returning with fresh eyes helped me see details I missed. After finishing, summarizing the text in my own words clarified my understanding. Discussing insights with friends or study groups added new perspectives I hadn’t considered. Finally, applying the knowledge I gained in real life or work scenarios solidified my comprehension and made reading more rewarding. By practicing these steps consistently, reading transformed from a daunting task into an enjoyable and enriching experience. I highly recommend these methods to anyone eager to truly understand and remember what they read.
