Books to understand how they control you

Have you ever made a decision and then thought, *Wait, was that even my choice?* 👀 These books had me questioning *everything*—from the ads I see to the news I consume to the conversations I have. Turns out, manipulation and persuasion are *everywhere*.

I went into this just wanting to understand how marketing works, and now I feel like I’ve taken the red pill in *The Matrix* 😂 After reading these, I felt like I had new vision—like I could *see* manipulation and persuasion happening in real-time.

***The Art of Manipulation* by Omar Johnson**

This book? A wake-up call.

The wild part? It’s not just the *obvious* manipulators we need to watch out for. It’s friends, coworkers, even family—sometimes without them even realizing it.

🔹 “OMG, I’ve seen this.”

🔹 Feels *dangerous* but empowering

🔹 Finally explains *gaslighting*

🔹 Makes you way more observant

If you’ve ever felt like someone was lowkey controlling you, this book will connect all the dots.

## ***The Hidden Persuaders* by Vance Packard**

If you’ve ever felt like ads are speaking *directly to you*, you’re not wrong.

It was written decades ago, but honestly? It feels *more* relevant now.

🔹 Ads = modern-day magic tricks

🔹 “Am I even making my own choices?”

🔹 Makes you question *everything*

🔹 I need to uninstall Instagram 😂

I started seeing hidden messages and persuasion tactics everywhere—from supermarket layouts to influencer posts. It’s wild how much of our behavior is *suggested* to us.

## ***Propaganda (The Formation of Men’s Attitudes)* by Jacques Ellul**

This book is *deep*.

🔹 Eye-opening & unsettling

🔹 “Am I being brainwashed?”

🔹 Explains why *everyone* thinks they’re right

🔹 Makes you crave independent thinking

The scary part? It’s not just dictatorships that use propaganda—it’s democracies, too.

It made me realize how much of my own worldview was influenced by media, culture, and education.

... Read moreSeriously, when I picked up Jacques Ellul's *Propaganda: The Formation of Men's Attitudes*, I thought I was just getting a historical look at how governments manipulate. Boy, was I wrong! This book isn't just 'deep,' as I mentioned before, it's like a cold splash of water on your face, waking you up to the subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways our thoughts and beliefs are shaped every single day. What struck me most was Ellul's argument that propaganda isn't just about lies or obvious political messaging. It's far more insidious. He talks about 'integration propaganda,' which isn't designed to change your mind about one specific thing, but rather to integrate you into a specific way of life, a particular social structure, or a set of values. Think about it: everything from public service announcements to educational systems, even marketing campaigns that promote a certain lifestyle, can function as integration propaganda. It’s not about screaming at you to believe something; it’s about creating an environment where a certain worldview feels natural, normal, and unquestionable. Reading this made me rethink everything I consume. It’s easy to spot the obvious political ads, but what about the constant stream of curated content on social media, or the subtle narratives woven into popular TV shows? Ellul's insights explain why it feels like 'everyone thinks they're right' because we're all being fed different versions of 'truth' designed to keep us aligned with various societal groups. It's not just dictatorships, as the article said, but democracies too, employing these techniques to maintain social cohesion or promote economic agendas. The book really pushed me to crave independent thinking. I started asking myself: 'Is this truly my opinion, or has it been subtly suggested to me?' It made me feel a bit paranoid at first, but then incredibly empowered. It's like gaining a new pair of glasses that allow you to see the underlying architecture of influence all around you. For anyone diving into *Propaganda*, I'd recommend approaching it with an open but critical mind. Don't just read it; actively observe how its concepts play out in your daily interactions, news consumption, and even personal choices. It's not about becoming cynical, but about becoming more discerning. Understanding Ellul's framework has made me a much more mindful consumer of information and has definitely strengthened my ability to form my own conclusions, rather than simply absorbing what's presented to me. It's a challenging read, but the clarity it offers is truly invaluable for navigating our complex modern world.
