What Are You Protecting

What part of yourself are you trying to protect?

I don’t think we protect parts of ourselves~

Because they’re weak…

I think we protect them

because we remember what happened~

The last time we didn’t.

So we learn to hold certain things closer…

Not out of fear~

But out of memory.

The part of you that doesn’t trust easily…

Didn’t come from nowhere.

The part of you that stays quiet…

Learned that speaking had consequences.

The part of you that keeps distance…

Knows what it feels like to get too close~

And lose yourself in the process.

So no…

it’s not just protection.

It’s preservation.

But here’s where it shifts~

Because at some point…

What once protected you

can start limiting you.

Not because it’s wrong…

But because you’re no longer the same person~

Who needed that level of protection.

So the question isn’t just~

“What part of yourself are you trying to protect?”

It’s also~

Is it still protecting you…

Or is it keeping you from something now?

You don’t have to explain it…

Just answer this for yourself~

Even if it’s only one word.

Are you:

Holding on…

Letting go…

Or still figuring it out?

You don’t have to reply here~

Just don’t lie to yourself.

... Read moreSometimes, I’ve found myself carrying invisible burdens—things nobody else sees but that weigh on me daily. This feeling aligns closely with the idea of protecting parts of ourselves, not because they are weak, but because of past experiences that taught us caution. For example, I once kept my guard up in relationships because I remembered the hurt of betrayal. It wasn’t about fear alone; it was about preserving my existence based on memory. One practical way I tackled this was by asking myself regularly: "Is this protection still necessary, or is it holding me back?" It takes courage to question long-held defenses, especially when they’ve shielded you from pain. But as I learned, sometimes what protects us can also limit us from embracing new opportunities or deeper connections. The phrase "What are you carrying that no one sees?" really struck me as a reminder that our internal preservation efforts are often invisible to others. These unseen shields can manifest as mistrust, silence, or distance—each rooted in real experiences but potentially restrictive in new contexts. I recommend journaling your feelings honestly, focusing on moments when you resist trust or closeness. Try to trace those reactions back to specific memories or fears. This practice was pivotal for me; it helped shift from merely protecting old wounds to preserving a healthy, evolving sense of self. Ultimately, growth comes from balancing self-protection with openness. Holding on, letting go, or figuring it out—each step is valid, and self-compassion is essential throughout. By acknowledging the invisible things we carry, we can decide consciously when to hold them close and when to set them down, opening space for new experiences.
