Prepping for seed starting this weekend! I’m using seeds saved from last year’s massive harvest, plus a few new varieties I’m determined to master.

Since my freezer was bursting at the seams last year, my big goal for 2026 is learning to can! I want to see those jars lined up on the shelf. The garden is getting a total remodel as soon as the snow melts, and I have a feeling this season is going to be our biggest yet. Gardening is one big beautiful learning process, and I’m ready for the growth!

Over the years, I’ve learned that proper seed storage is key to maintaining high germination rates; I store mine in airtight containers inside a cool, dry place to keep them viable until planting time. One tip I've found useful during seed starting is to label your seed trays clearly with the variety name and planting date. This helps track germination progress and organize seedlings efficiently. When it comes to canning, starting early by familiarizing yourself with the basic equipment and safety guidelines can save you a lot of hassle. Using a water bath canner or a pressure canner, depending on the type of produce, is essential to preserve food safely. I recommend practicing with high-acid foods like jams or pickles first to build confidence. Since you’re remodeling your garden, consider dedicating specific areas for crops you plan to can extensively. This way, you’ll maximize the yield of your favorite vegetables or fruits and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing those beautifully lined jars on your shelf. Gardening and canning are wonderful learning processes that grow not only your food but also your knowledge and patience. Embrace mistakes as lessons, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from experienced gardeners and canners in online communities or local workshops. This season could truly be your most rewarding yet, combining fruitful gardening with wholesome, home-canned goodness.
