My other baby eggroll
this is my other baby eggroll she is a gerbil we just lost her brother oyster the other day so she’s a bit sad 😔 but we are getting her some friends 🔜
Losing a pet, even a tiny gerbil like Eggroll's brother Oyster, is heartbreaking, and it's clear she's feeling the loss deeply. I've been doing a lot of reading and learning about gerbil dynamics, and it turns out gerbils are incredibly social creatures. They thrive on companionship, and being alone can be really stressful for them. My heart aches seeing my little Eggroll by herself in her cage, so getting her some new friends is definitely a priority to help her overcome this sadness. My research has shown that introducing new gerbils, especially to one who's been through a loss, requires a lot of patience and a special method called the 'split cage' introduction. It's where you divide the cage with a mesh barrier, allowing them to smell and see each other without direct contact. This way, they can get used to each other's scent over a week or two before a full introduction. I'm preparing for this process carefully, as I want the transition to be as smooth and stress-free as possible for Eggroll and her future companions. It’s all about creating a positive first impression! Beyond companionship, I'm also focusing on creating the best possible environment for her. Gerbils, like Eggroll, love to burrow, so providing a really deep layer of wood shavings is essential – at least 6-8 inches! It gives them a natural outlet for tunneling and nesting, which is a big part of their well-being. A constantly fresh water bottle and a balanced diet are, of course, basics I always ensure. But what about keeping her entertained and active? That's where toys and enrichment come in, especially important while she's waiting for her new friends. I've found that cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls are a huge hit – they love to chew them up and make nests. Untreated wooden chew toys are also great for keeping their teeth healthy. I’m looking for a solid surface exercise wheel to prevent bumblefoot, and I'll definitely be adding a sand bath. Gerbils absolutely adore taking sand baths to keep their fur clean and healthy. These activities not only provide physical exercise but also mental stimulation, which is crucial for a happy gerbil. I'm even thinking of hiding treats within her wood shavings to encourage foraging behavior! Watching Eggroll explore new enrichment items, even when she's a bit down, gives me hope. I know with the right care, a stimulating environment with plenty of toys, and the joy of new friends, my precious baby gerbil will soon be back to her playful, curious self. It's a journey of love and learning, and I'm committed to making her life as full and happy as it can be.
