Day Trip from Kyoto to ✨Ōmihachiman✨

This is your sign to visit Omi-hachiman (Shiga Prefecture) (we went in end may 2025)

Had an extra day to spare from Kyoto and the sis found this place on tiktok!!! Initially was reluctant to go but I was really glad I did go as it was one of the highlights of my japan trip!!!

This place was so calm, with not as much tourists!!! I added the location of the places I visited in each picture so check them out~

📍La Collina

This was the main reason of our visit to Omihachiman. The outside of this place was like one out of a studio ghibli movie!! La Collina is actually a huge confectionary shop famous for their baumkuchen. They even have viewing areas to show you how to make the baumkuchen in house (this was so interesting and fun to see). They also had a huge dining area, where we tried their baumkuchen and ice cream!! Spent so long here taking photos and enjoying the area.

📍Ropeway to Mount Hachiman

We sat a ropeway (need to pay but I forgot how much, not that expensive) up to mount hachiman and was greeted with a 💯 breathtaking view of the town and lake biwa. It’s one of the places I will never forget. Although, there’s not much to do when you’re up here but just soak in the view hehe. There are some routes to hike a little but we weren’t in appropriate attire and shoes so it was kinda slippery.

📍Himure Hachimangu Shrine

There was a shrine on the way to the ropeway to mount hachiman so we popped by to take a look!!

We also visited the canal areas in Ōmihachiman where you can take a chill boat ride but we couldn’t figure out the location to take the ride so we gave up and just watched the boats pass by.

... Read moreIf you plan to visit Ōmihachiman, consider timing your trip to avoid peak tourist seasons so you can fully enjoy the serene atmosphere. Besides the spots I shared, there's also the famous Gujo Hachiman Castle nearby, known for its beautiful chirashi don (scattered sushi bowls) which are a local delicacy and worth trying for a delightful lunch. For a more immersive experience, you might want to explore the charming canal area where boat rides are available—though I missed the boarding spot, locals recommend taking this relaxing ride that offers a unique perspective on the historic town. If you love hiking, pack proper shoes and attire to venture further up Mount Hachiman beyond the ropeway station. The trails provide peaceful nature walks and more breathtaking views. Lastly, don't miss out on visiting the artisan town of Harie Han, famous for its glass crafts. It’s a short trip from Ōmihachiman and offers a wonderful cultural contrast to your day. Overall, Ōmihachiman is a perfect day trip from Kyoto for history enthusiasts, foodies, and those wanting a quiet break immersed in nature and traditional Japanese culture.
