✨Mini guide to booking your China High-speed Rail tickets on Railway12306 app✨

Here’s a guide on booking booking your China High-speed Rail tickets on Railway12306 app - eng version. I like to use this app as this is the official app for booking and don’t really like to use third party apps.

Note that the eng version has limitations like not being able to choose your seats/ seeing which stations are between your departure and arrival stations. I like to switch to the chinese version after booking so i can see these information. The chinese version also allows me to see which gate to enter for my train so I don’t have to search on the screens at the station.

Before I forget - there will be NO confirmation email upon purchase of your tickets so don’t worry if you did not receive anything in your mail. All bookings reflected in app only.

Train tickets can be booked 14 days in advance so do look out to “camp” for the tickets especially if you are travelling on a china public holiday, if you don’t book early be prepared to stand hohoho.

Tried to list down whatever I can remember in this guide. Do drop any other questions in the comments and I will try my best to help😆

... Read moreBooking tickets on the Railway12306 app can be a bit tricky for first-timers, especially with the English version's limitations like not being able to select seats or view all intermediate stops. From my experience, after securing your tickets on the English interface, switching to the Chinese version of the app really helps. It allows you to see the detailed route with all the stops and even the train gate for boarding, which saves a lot of time at the station. When booking, aiming for first-class seats is a good balance between comfort and price. First-class cabins tend to be quieter and don't allow standing passengers, making your journey more peaceful. Business class offers extra luxury but at a higher cost, so consider this if you want an elevated travel experience. Also, a critical tip is that no confirmation emails are sent after purchase—your booking details are stored only within the app. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the ticket details in the app and keep your passport handy when scanning for entry multiple times at the station. During busy seasons or public holidays, tickets sell out quickly, so booking exactly 14 days ahead is essential. "Camping" the release time for tickets can improve your chances to get preferred seats. Payment can be done seamlessly through popular Chinese digital wallets like Alipay and WeChat Pay, linked with international cards such as Visa or with local payment methods. This broad payment support makes purchasing tickets straightforward. Finally, plan to arrive at the station with enough lead time—about 45 minutes prior is ideal. The app also allows one free train time change, so if you're early at the station, it's worth checking if you can switch to earlier departures and get refunded the price difference. Using navigation apps like AMAPS to plan your route from airports or hotels to the train station adds another layer of preparedness. For example, taking the Airport Line before connecting to your high-speed train is common and easy once you know the route. Overall, while the Railway12306 app has its quirks, learning these tips and tricks makes traveling China's vast high-speed rail network convenient and enjoyable.
