Was it ever my job?

I feel like I’ve lived a whole lifetime already. My mom raised me alone, but it never really felt like she was raising me. It was always me taking care of her. Every guy she brought home was a new disaster—some hit her, some hit me, some used drugs, some stole from us. And every time things fell apart, she leaned on me like I was her parent.

Her whole family kept telling me I should be grateful. That she “stayed,” so I owed her. Meanwhile, I had to spoon-feed her during her breakdowns, clean up after the chaos, and pretend I was okay while grown men were literally beating me. She even took some of them back.

This past year I finally started planning to get out. Working, saving, researching… just trying to give myself a chance at a normal life. And the second I wasn’t available to babysit her emotions? Her family started calling me selfish. Saying I should’ve taken care of her. That I “lack empathy.” That I’m worse than the dad who left.

Like… how was any of this ever supposed to be my job?

I’m just so tired of being told I’m ungrateful when I never even got to be a kid.

Do you think I’m out of line for wanting to put myself first for once?

... Read moreLiving through a childhood where you become "the adult" for a parent who was meant to protect you creates lasting emotional challenges that many cannot easily share. Being the caregiver to a parent suffering from instability, emotional breakdowns, or abusive relationships can force children to sacrifice their own needs and innocence prematurely. This situation often leads to feelings of exhaustion, confusion, and resentment, all while others in the family expect gratitude or blame for "not doing enough." It is important to recognize that in such circumstances, children like this author have effectively missed out on experiencing a typical childhood. Instead of being cared for, they were burdened with managing chaos and emotional trauma. Studies in psychology highlight that parentification—children taking on adult responsibilities—can negatively affect mental health, making self-care and boundary setting essential steps toward healing. For anyone questioning if it was ever their job to bear this responsibility, the answer is no. Childhood is meant for growth and safety, not caretaking. It’s empowering to put yourself and your well-being first and to seek support, whether through trusted friends, counseling, or support groups. Affirming your feelings and decisions to prioritize your own future represents a courageous and necessary reclaiming of your life. Remember, empathy from others sometimes comes with conditions or unrealistic expectations, but true empathy honors your experience and respects your need to choose your path. Your desire to plan for a normal, healthy life is justified and brave. Sharing stories openly, as seen in this article, helps break the silence around family struggles and inspires others to acknowledge their feelings without shame. If you or someone you know finds themselves in similar circumstances, know there are resources and communities willing to listen and help. You are not alone, and it’s always OK to prioritize your emotional and physical safety above all else.

When people talk about FMLA, it always reminds me how different it looks in education. When I had my baby in the first week of May, my entire “leave” was basically using my sick and personal days just to finish the school year. That was my version of FMLA. In teaching, I can get around sixty school
