1. I will say time and time again to get in the mindset of PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS rather than practice makes perfect. It’s okay if your best looks different than the person behind or in front of you as long as you are just focused on what your teacher says and relaxing into the pose to the best of your ability.
2. CONSISTENCY IS KEY! The ideal amount of yoga you should be doing to improve your practice is 1-3 60 minute classes a week and 15mins daily… I’m not going to be mad at you if you miss a day but keep in mind that just like any exercise if you want to see improvements you need to be consistent, preferably either in the morning or right before bed do a 15 minute routine focusing on an area of the body.
3. Rather than trying to stuff in a bunch of poses in your routine it’s more rewarding to HOLD POSES FOR A LONGER TIME. Short stretches don’t hold much value, to begin seeing changes in soft tissue and improving flexibility in your body you should have approximately 2-5 minute hold times (assuming you are practicing consistently).
4. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!! It is normal to feel some uncomfortableness sometimes and that means it’s working! In fact a good instructor will tell you exactly where and what you should be feeling. But if you are feeling any sharp Pain then you should not go through with the pose, talk to your instructor about it but if you are in the middle of class and are unable to in the moment it’s better to rest in a Child’s Pose till the end of said pose.
5. It’s important in your practice to be tuned in to the present and relaxed in the moment, as yoga instructors we want you to leave your life’s thoughts from family, work, school etc, at the door and be able to simply focus on yourself. But if you struggle with ADHD or simply focusing in yoga classes that can be hard to do. So when in class and your instructor brings up breathing, FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH WORK through out the whole class. That way you have something to keep your mind in the present rather than your to do lists. #yogatips#yogalifestyle#yogaclass#yoga#fyp

One key aspect often emphasized by experienced instructors is adopting the mindset of 'practice makes progress' rather than perfection. This approach reduces frustration and encourages a patient, growth-oriented attitude towards yoga.
Consistency plays a vital role in making tangible improvements. Research suggests that practicing yoga one to three times a week for around 60 minutes, supplemented by short daily routines of 15 minutes, can promote steady progress. Morning and evening sessions are particularly beneficial, helping to center your mind and release tension accumulated throughout the day.
Another crucial factor for enhancing your practice is holding poses for longer durations—ideally between two to five minutes. Prolonged holds facilitate deeper stretching of soft tissues and promote joint stability. This practice contributes to increased flexibility, better posture, and heightened body awareness over time.
Listening to your body's signals is essential to avoid injury and foster sustainable practice habits. While some discomfort indicates muscle engagement and stretching, sharp pain should never be ignored. Modifications such as resting in Child’s Pose during class can provide relief without interrupting your flow.
Mindfulness and breath focus are foundational elements in yoga that help maintain concentration and relaxation. For individuals who may experience difficulty maintaining focus, such as those with ADHD, concentrating on breath work during practice serves as an effective anchor, reducing distracting thoughts and enhancing presence.
Additionally, training under certified instructors—such as those holding a 200HR Yoga Alliance certification—ensures that your practice is guided safely and effectively. These instructors provide essential feedback tailored to your skill level, helping you progress while minimizing risks.
Embracing these tips will not only improve your physical yoga practice but also contribute to mental wellbeing. Yoga’s holistic benefits extend beyond the mat, fostering a balanced lifestyle conducive to health and happiness. Consistent effort, patient self-compassion, and mindful focus are your best allies on this transformative journey.
