Narcissists rewrite history..

2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreExperiencing a narcissist rewrite history can be one of the most disorienting and frustrating things you'll ever go through. I remember countless times feeling like I was losing my mind, questioning my own memory and sanity. They really do twist events to escape accountability, and it leaves you feeling utterly crazy. But let me tell you, from my own journey, you are absolutely not crazy for knowing the truth. So, why do they do it? It's often deeply rooted in their fragile ego and their desperate need to maintain a perfect self-image. Admitting fault or taking responsibility for their actions would shatter that image, so rewriting history becomes their go-to defense mechanism. They might genuinely believe their version of events, or they might consciously manipulate to gain control and avoid consequences. This often manifests as gaslighting, where they deny things ever happened, twist your words, or even invent scenarios that never occurred, making you doubt your own perception of reality. It's a powerful tool to disarm you and keep you under their influence. I've learned that recognizing the patterns is the first step toward reclaiming your sanity. They might switch narratives mid-conversation, deny past promises, or blame you for things they clearly did. One time, I vividly remembered a conversation where boundaries were set, only for it to be completely erased and replaced with a story where I was the unreasonable one. It made me feel so isolated and confused. What helped me immensely was starting to document things. Not in an obsessive way, but jotting down key conversations, dates, and what was said. This wasn't for confrontation, but for my own peace of mind. It gave me a tangible record to refer back to when I felt my memory was being challenged. It reinforced that I wasn't imagining things and that my truth was valid. Another crucial step is trusting your gut feeling. That persistent feeling of unease or confusion is usually your intuition telling you something is off. Don't dismiss it. Protect your mental space by limiting exposure if possible, or by setting firm boundaries. When they try to rewrite history, you don't have to engage in a debate. You can simply state your truth calmly or disengage. For example, 'My memory of that is different,' or 'I'm not going to argue about what happened.' Remember, their rewritten history is about *them*, not you. It's a reflection of their inability to face reality. Your journey to healing involves accepting that you cannot change their behavior, but you can change how you react to it and protect yourself. Finding support from friends, family, or a therapist who understands narcissistic abuse can also provide immense validation and strength during this challenging time. You are not alone in this, and your truth matters.
