... Read moreYou know, as a dad, there are just some moments that make your heart swell with a joy that’s hard to put into words. Seeing your child achieve something they've worked so incredibly hard for is definitely one of them. For me, that moment came recently when my amazing daughter, Kayloni, officially became a 2025 cheerleader! It’s not just a title; it’s a testament to her dedication and passion. I still smile every time I look at that special photo we took – her standing there, beaming from ear to ear in her cheer uniform, holding up her celebratory poster board. That board, adorned with her own picture and those vibrant pom-poms, proudly declared her a '2025 cheerleader.' Her smile in that picture says it all – pure joy, pride, and a hint of the excitement for what’s ahead!
Being a #cheerdad isn't just about dropping her off at practice or cheering from the sidelines (though I do a lot of that, and loudly!). It's about witnessing the journey, the dedication, the early mornings, the late nights, and the sheer grit it takes to master those routines. I vividly remember Kayloni practicing her jumps, kicks, and chants tirelessly in the living room. Sometimes she’d get a little frustrated when a move didn’t go exactly right, but she always, always pushed through. That unwavering resilience and determination are what truly make her shine, both on and off the mat.
For any other parents out there with aspiring cheerleaders, my biggest tip is simple: be their biggest fan. Encourage them, support their dreams wholeheartedly, and understand that it’s a journey with incredible highs and sometimes challenging lows. We spend hours making sure her uniform is just right, packing healthy and energizing snacks, and being there for every single practice and competition. It's a significant commitment of time and energy, but honestly, every second is worth it when you see the confidence she builds, the teamwork she learns, and the genuine friendships she forms.
We’ve learned so much along the way about navigating the world of youth cheerleading. Finding the right gym or program that truly aligns with your child's goals and values is absolutely crucial. We looked for a place that focused not just on perfecting stunts and tumbling, but also on fostering a positive, inclusive environment and building strong, supportive friendships. Kayloni has made some incredible bonds with her squad mates, and seeing them lift each other up – sometimes literally, in a stunt! – and celebrate each other's successes is truly inspiring. It's more than a sport; it's a community.
Preparing for tryouts can be nerve-wracking for both kids and parents, but we tried to focus on the process rather than just the outcome. We worked on her flexibility, her core strength, and her ability to quickly remember intricate routines. But most importantly, we emphasized having fun and letting her unique personality shine through. That authentic spirit and genuine love for cheerleading are what truly set a cheerleader apart.
The 2025 season is going to be an incredibly exciting one for Kayloni, and I can't wait to see her grow even more as an athlete and a person. If you're a cheer parent too, what are your favorite memories or words of wisdom? Let's connect in the comments – it’s a unique and rewarding club to be a part of, and I’m so proud to be a part of Kayloni’s amazing cheer journey!
