James 3:1-3

Controlling the Tongue

Dear brothers and sisters,[a] not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth.

Take note James 3:1-3 serves as a warning to aspiring teachers and a general exhortation to all believers to control their speech, emphasizing that teachers face a stricter judgment and that mature faith is demonstrated by controlled, helpful words rather than destructive ones. The passage transitions into a broader discussion about the power and destructive potential of the human tongue, framing it as a small but untamable force that reveals a person's inner spiritual state.

Warning to Teachers (v. 1): "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness".

Purposeful Speech: Believers are called to use their words to inform, heal, and do good, not to cause harm or destruction.

Greater Accountability: Teachers, who are entrusted with God's word and have a greater influence, bear a heavier responsibility and will be held to a higher standard.

Example of the Tongue: A corrupted tongue in a teacher provides a destructive model for those being taught, highlighting the need for control and a high standard of character.

The Nature of the Tongue (v. 2-3): The passage moves to a general discussion about the tongue itself, regardless of a person's role.

Everyone Stumbles making it right is what essential: James acknowledges that everyone, including himself, "stumbles in many things".

Demonstrate Wisdom: True wisdom is not in knowledge or status but is displayed through a good "conversation" and a "meekness of spirit and temper".

A Call to Control: The passage serves as a powerful reminder to pray for God's help in guarding the words that come from our mouths.

Wisdom speaks.

The Holy Spirit teach through his children listening to people when it comes to context we can discern what’s from the Holy Spirit and what’s from those evil spirits studying the word of God is how we learn the Holy Spirit voice of truth.

Conclusion.

1 John 2:27

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

Take note Apostle John letter written to early believers facing division and false teaching, particularly from Gnostics who claimed to possess secret spiritual knowledge. To combat these deceivers who denied Jesus' incarnation and sought to lead believers astray, John reminded his readers that genuine believers have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, which serves as an inner teacher and guide, making external teachers unnecessary and providing the truth to discern.
