Theme: these are the things the Lord hates we need to hate what the Lord hates.
Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things the Lord hates—
no, seven things he detests:
haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that kill the innocent,
a heart that plots evil,
feet that race to do wrong,
a false witness who pours out lies,
a person who sows discord in a family.
Divine story time .
Proverbs 6:16-19 introduces a list of seven things God specifically hates (or finds detestable), using a literary device of "six things... yes, seven" to emphasize the seriousness, focusing on internal attitudes (pride, wicked plots) and outward actions (lying, violence, sowing discord) that disrupt God's created order, contrasting with righteous living, and describing the destructive nature of such corruption that leads to ruin, as noted in Enduring Word. The passage moves from the lazy person (vv. 6-11) to the corrupt individual, highlighting how these sins stem from pride and lead to division.

Key Elements & Background
Literary Device: The structure "six things... seven" (a classic Hebrew literary technique, also seen in Job 5:19, Proverbs 30:21) emphasizes the entire list, with the last item often being the most significant or encompassing.
Context: The passage follows a warning against laziness (Proverbs 6:6-11) and introduces the "worthless, wicked man," showing how internal corruption manifests externally, leading to division.
Focus on the Heart: The list emphasizes internal motives (proud eyes, wicked heart) and their physical expressions (lying tongue, bloody hands, running feet, false witness), showing sin begins in the inner person.
Theme of Discord: The final point, sowing strife, connects the previous actions—pride, lies, violence—as all contributing to broken relationships, which God hates.
The Seven "Hated" Things
Haughty Eyes (Pride): Arrogance, looking down on others.
Lying Tongue: Dishonesty, especially in justice.
Hands That Shed Innocent Blood: Violence against the innocent.
