nope, we didn't learn..
Just got through reading *that* part... 😭
It’s funny how some stories just stick with you, isn't it? My original post was all about re-reading Game of Thrones and how even after all these years, Ned Stark's journey and that pivotal moment just hit me right in the feels. It's a testament to how powerful George R.R. Martin's storytelling is. But as I'm going through it again, especially having seen the show too, it really makes me think: what about a Game of Thrones parents guide? This isn't just a fantasy epic; it's a deep, often brutal exploration of power, war, and human nature. If you're a parent wondering if Game of Thrones is suitable for your teens, or even thinking about watching it with them, it's definitely a conversation worth having. From my POV, there are a few key areas that parents should be aware of. First off, the violence. Westeros is a harsh world, and the series doesn't shy away from depicting it graphically. We're talking battles, torture, executions – like, obviously, what happens to that character who you thought was safe (ahem, Ned Stark). It can be intense and quite gory, so if your child is sensitive to violence, this might be a significant concern. It's not just action; it's often brutal and emotional. Then there's the mature content. Nudity and sexual themes are prevalent, particularly in the earlier seasons. While some of it is plot-driven, a lot is there to establish the decadent and often cruel nature of the world. Heavy drinking, drug use, and strong language are also common. These elements contribute to the adult tone of the series and are definitely something to consider when evaluating it for younger audiences. Beyond the explicit content, the show deals with incredibly complex and often dark themes: political intrigue, betrayal, moral ambiguity, slavery, incest, and existential threats. These aren't always easy topics, and they can spark some really interesting, but potentially heavy, discussions. It's not a simple good vs. evil narrative, which is what makes it so compelling, but also requires a certain level of maturity to process. So, what's my personal take on a Game of Thrones parents guide? I'd generally recommend it for mature teenagers, say 16+. Even then, I think it's best viewed with a parent or guardian who can discuss the themes and events as they unfold. It’s an opportunity to talk about power dynamics, consequences of actions, and why characters make the choices they do. It’s not just about censoring, but about guiding understanding. If you're considering introducing it to younger viewers, maybe holding off until they're a bit older is the best approach. There are plenty of other fantastic fantasy stories out there that are more age-appropriate. But for those who are ready, Game of Thrones can be an incredibly rewarding, albeit challenging, viewing and reading experience. What do you all think? Have you watched or read GoT with your kids? What was your experience?
