Winter Sowing ❄️

1/18 Edited to

... Read moreWinter sowing is a fantastic method to start your perennials and other garden favorites like wildflowers and herbs early in the season. From my experience, one of the key steps for success is understanding cold stratification — this mimics natural winter conditions and helps seeds break dormancy. For example, seeds like hollyhocks, which you might have saved from last season, often need this chill period to germinate properly. A tip I’ve found useful is to sow your seeds in containers or bags that can withstand freezing temperatures but still allow moisture and air circulation. Using recycled plastic containers or milk jugs works well for this. Place them outside in a protected spot where they’ll experience natural weather cycles but won’t be disturbed by heavy snow or wind. I also recommend labeling your seed containers clearly, especially if you’re sowing multiple varieties like perennial herbs and wildflowers. This makes it easier to track their progress and identify which ones respond best to your winter sowing technique. If you’re still waiting on seeds to arrive in the mail, especially those that need to go through cold stratification, it’s a good idea to plan your sowing schedule so they have enough time outdoors before spring. Patience is essential! Some seeds can take weeks to germinate after experiencing cold temperatures. Finally, keep your fingers crossed like Michelle and stay optimistic. Gardening is often about trial and error. Every season brings new lessons, and with winter sowing, you’re setting your garden up for a vibrant and successful spring bloom. Happy sowing!

What Winter Sowing Means

Winter sowing is when you start seeds outdoors in winter, using mini greenhouses (like milk jugs, clear totes, or salad containers). Instead of starting seeds indoors under lights, you let nature handle it — cold, snow, and all. 🌼 Why It’s Amazing    •   No grow lights or indoor space needed.
