trying the famous HK mixian!
📍fei zaap mai lan
finally tried out this famous hongkong mixian at vivo city~
🫘mighty four bowl ($13.90)
THE SOUP. the zhajiang broth was so rich and flavourful i just kept drinking it :p also requested for more beansprouts as i lovee that crunchy bite in my noodles.
this was a signature item and came with lottss of ingredients (char siew, ham, fish roe balls, fried beancurd roll, chives & beansprouts)
was enjoyable, but i wouldn’t specially come back for it ⋆˚࿔
🍅 tomato chop bowl ($16.90)
as a girlie who loves tomato soup, i was so disappointed T T the soup wasn’t like the thick and rich hdl soup i was expecting, and the pork chop was difficult to eat as well :( if you enjoy tomato soup that’s on the lighter side, you would probably enjoy this~
although this was a signature item on the menu as well, i feel like you can probably skip this! i ordered this but ended up stealing bites from the other bowl LOL
overall, this place fell a little flat for me as i had really high expectations. def had better mixian elsewhere~
rating: ★★.5/5
If you’re exploring the world of mixian noodles, especially the Hong Kong style, it’s great to know a bit more about the customizable aspect that places like Fei Zaap Mai Lan offer. From what I discovered, you can create your own bowl by choosing your staple noodles, soup base, and at least three toppings, which gives lots of room to tailor your meal to exactly what you enjoy. The zhajiang broth is traditionally rich and packed with umami, which made it the highlight of my visit. Adding toppings like char siew, ham, and fish roe balls can really elevate that authentic experience. However, personally, the lighter tomato soup broth didn’t meet my expectations since I prefer a thicker, richer style soup. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys a milder, more delicate soup, this might be right up your alley. Also, I learned from the menu details that there are some interesting add-ons like fried beancurd rolls and spicy pickled options, which could add unique textures and flavors if you like to experiment. Since I love crunchy textures, beansprouts were my go-to topping, and they definitely made a difference in enjoyment. From my experience, while the place is known for its variety and mixian customization, if you’re someone with high expectations or a preference for intensely rich broths, you might want to explore other mixian spots as well. Feel free to share your own combos or favorite broths — mixian is such a fun dish to make your own! For those new to mixian, it’s also good to check if the restaurant offers any combo deals or smaller snack items like fried wontons or pudding-type desserts, which can round out the meal nicely without overwhelming your taste buds.
