Let's dive a little deeper into my reading journey and what makes a book a hit (or a miss!) for me. First, about those ratings! My ⭐️ (stars) are all about the overall story – plot, character development, pacing, and how much I connected with the narrative. A 4/5 ✨ typically means I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. My 🌶️ (spice) rating, on the other hand, is purely about the level of intimacy and steaminess. A 4.5/5 🌶️, like for 'Collide,' means it was quite steamy and definitely for mature audiences, while a 2.5/5 🌶️, like with 'Beautiful Monster,' suggests the romance was present but not the central focus of the physical intimacy. Speaking of specific genres, I've noticed a real soft spot for sports romance lately! Both 'Collide' by Bal Khabra and my current read, 'Reckless on Ice' by Adrian Hale, fall into this category. There's something about the competitive spirit mixed with undeniable chemistry that just hooks me. For 'Reckless on Ice,' the cover with the classic 'ice skate' and 'hockey stick' instantly drew me in, and discovering it had 'Hockey x Football' and a 'Cinnamon Roll' hero sealed the deal. I love how these stories often feature strong, driven characters who find vulnerability and passion amidst their demanding careers. It’s a great escape! Then there’s the broader contemporary romance. 'Beautiful Monster' and 'False Start' are good examples here. While the cover of 'Beautiful Monster' showing a 'man and woman embracing' might promise intense romance, for me, the execution didn't quite hit the mark. However, 'False Start' by Felice Stevens, which was an ARC read (meaning I got an advanced copy before its official release!), really surprised me. Sometimes, stepping outside my usual picks for an ARC turns into a fantastic discovery. The background and plot of 'False Start' were so engaging that it quickly became a favorite. It proves that even if a cover features a 'shirtless man' – a common trope – the story inside can be incredibly rich and compelling. So, how can you find your next great read?
