When starting nursing school, I looked at videos to see what I needed to get. Everyone said “an iPad! Stanley cup! Hokas!”

I am here to tell you that you do not need those things…

These are things I actually used and were essential to my first semester of school.

1. Manual BP cuff:

- essential for the Vital Signs check offs

2. stethoscope case

- keeps everything organized

- TIP: have different bags for clinical and lecture.

3. FA Davis success books

- has answers in the book with rationales

4. Paper & ink for a printer

- I bought a printer instead of using my schools

- EVERYTHING is on paper in school

... Read moreAs you prepare for nursing school, understanding what tools and resources will genuinely support your success is crucial. Many incoming students often hear about the latest gadgets like iPads or specific brands of shoes, yet these may not be essential. Focus on acquiring a manual BP cuff—this is indispensable for practicing vital signs and honing your skills effectively. A sturdy stethoscope case is also vital for keeping your equipment organized, especially if you separate your clinical and lecture materials. Consider investing in FA Davis success books, which many nursing students praise as invaluable study aids. These texts not only contain comprehensive content but also provide rationales for answers, enhancing your understanding of complex topics. Having your personal printer is another great asset; with much of your coursework needing to be printed, this can save you time and hassle. Moreover, establishing a well-structured sleep schedule can help improve focus and retention during lectures. Confidence should not be overlooked either—it plays a key role in practical assessments and interactions with patients and colleagues. Additionally, carrying small essentials like vapour rub for clinical settings, a clipboard binder, and extra scrubs can make a significant difference in your daily routine. Overall, prioritize practicality over trends. Equip yourself with knowledge and resources that are aligned with the realities of nursing education, and you'll build a solid foundation for your future career.
