hike with me🥾🏔️
Summit Lake Trail was my absolute favorite hike since living in the PNW!
It’s a very beginner friendly hike, and well worth the views!
Once you get to the Carbon River Northwest Entrance of Mt. Ranier National Park, you will take a left over the river right before you enter the park and follow the gravel road up to the parking lot. This road is pretty rough, so I would suggest an all or 4WD vehicle!
According to AllTrails (if you don’t have the app and you’re a hiker, I would highly recommend!) the trail is 5.8 miles out and back with a 1,417ft elevation gain. My husband and I ended up hiking a total of 6.55 miles with a 1,509 elevation gain. The total time we spent from the time we got out of our Jeep to the time we got back in it was 3 hours and 48 minutes. This of course included all the stops to take in the views, take pictures, and eat some snacks!
We arrived at 0700 and the parking lot was pretty empty, however, when we got back to the parking lot (around 11) it was packed along with tons of cars on the side of the road up to about a mile from the parking lot. We didn’t run into many people on the hike up, but coming back down was a different story, so I definitely recommend getting there early!

When I first started hiking, deciphering those 'trail difficulty ratings' was a bit of a mystery! What exactly makes a hike 'easy,' 'moderate,' or 'hard'? My trip to Summit Lake Trail (which I mentioned earlier) really solidified for me what a truly beginner-friendly, easy hike feels like, especially with those stunning Mt. Rainier views reflected in the clear lake. For me, an 'easy' trail, like Summit Lake, usually means well-maintained paths, minimal steep sections, and manageable distances. They're perfect for enjoying nature without pushing your limits too much. You often find yourself surrounded by lush pine trees and getting those panoramic views without a grueling ascent. These are ideal if you're just looking for tranquil views and a nice walk, perhaps even with kids or if you're new to hiking. The joy is in the journey and soaking in the beauty of a vast forested landscape. Moving up to 'moderate,' you might encounter longer distances, more significant elevation gains, or some rocky outcrops. These often require a bit more stamina and perhaps some basic hiking gear, like proper boots and trekking poles, but they still offer incredible rewards, often leading to more secluded spots or even closer views of distant snow-capped mountains. I've found some amazing places near me by looking for trails in this category when I want a bit more of a challenge without committing to an all-day epic. Then there are 'hard' trails. These are typically long, very steep, and can have challenging terrain like scrambling, stream crossings, or exposed sections. They demand good physical fitness, proper gear, and often experience. While the article mainly focuses on an easy hike, understanding these categories helps immensely when you're planning your next adventure. Many of these more challenging trails might take you closer to the snow-capped mountain peaks, offering breathtaking vistas, but always assess your own capabilities and prepare thoroughly first. So, how do I find these amazing 'places to walk near me'? My go-to is definitely the AllTrails app, as I mentioned. It's fantastic for filtering by difficulty, length, and even features like lakes or waterfalls. I also check local park websites and hiking forums for recent conditions and recommendations. Don't forget to consider access roads; as I learned with Summit Lake's gravel road, sometimes a 4WD vehicle is a real lifesaver, especially if you're venturing out to less-trafficked spots in the PNW. Always look at the elevation gain and total mileage to get a real sense of what you're in for. Checking the weather and trail reports is also crucial, especially with those beautiful sun rays making things warm, or if you're hoping to see a snow-capped mountain clearly. I love finding a spot on a rocky shore to just sit and take in the deep blue waters. Whether you're after a gentle stroll or a more demanding trek, understanding these difficulty ratings and planning ahead makes all the difference. The joy of hiking, whether it's gazing at a tranquil view of a clear lake or conquering a rocky shore, is truly unparalleled. Happy trails!
