Read moreAs a mom managing toddler bedtime routines, I’ve noticed that when my blue collar husband is home, what should be a quick dinner, bath, and bedtime turns into a lengthy process — often taking two extra hours. At first glance, it may seem counterintuitive. One might assume having an extra set of hands would speed things up, but in reality, it often introduces new challenges. One reason is that my husband’s presence changes the rhythm of our evening. He brings a more relaxed and playful energy that our toddler absolutely loves, which naturally prolongs the time spent chatting, playing, or resisting bedtime rituals. While I tend to be more task-focused during these times, his playful approach turns dinner and bath into mini bonding moments, which, although wonderful, make the schedule stretch out. Additionally, when my husband takes on activities like bath or storytime, he tends to be less strict with routines but more engaged in the emotional connection, which can slow down the process. This may be why it 'feels easier' emotionally but actually takes longer. It’s a beautiful yet exhausting balancing act of parenting styles. Understanding this dynamic helped me embrace the extra time as quality family moments rather than a delay. Also, coordinating better beforehand on which tasks to focus on or giving each parent specific roles has helped streamline the flow without losing the warmth. For other moms managing toddler bedtime with their partners, especially those with demanding jobs or blue collar roles, it’s important to accept that adding another caregiver doesn’t always equal less time spent. Instead, it can mean a richer experience full of laughter and memories — albeit with a longer bedtime routine.
