Everyone, meet our newest joy and addiction 🥹🥰

When i found out i was pregnant, i cried everyday for 2 months straight because i wasn’t necessarily ready to have another baby. A week before finding out the gender of my 5th baby, I woke up one night and whispered a heartfelt prayer to God:

"Dear God, if you’re blessing me with a fifth child, could you please make it a boy? Because i have always dreamed of having my son play for the NBA while little ole me cheers from the sidelines in my most authentic Nigerian accent and attitude shouting, 'That’s my boy!!'"

This wasn’t a plea born from discontent with my beautiful and most preciously talented baby girls or a longing to fit some “igbo family” stereotype.

Instead, it was a simple curiosity—what would it be like to have a son? Who would he look like? What would he look like? What would he be when he grows up? Would my dream of being like Kevin Durant’s mother ever come to pass?🥹

The following week, the news arrived: I was having a boy, and I was so over the moon!

Despite what some might think, I wasn’t “on the hunt for a male child” for my Igbo husband, as many people have constantly said.

Why, you ask?

First, God reassured me that I didn’t need to seek a male child because he was never missing from our life.

Secondly, the gift of a child—whether boy or girl—rests solely — in God’s hands. He alone knows when the time is right to fulfill our heart's desires.

So, with immense gratitude, we welcome this new addition to our family. It’s not just the joy of having a son; it's the surprise blessing that came when we least expected it.

For many parents, the news of a child’s gender can stir up deep-seated hopes and dreams, especially when it’s not just about the biological aspect, but also about cultural identity and personal aspirations. This story beautifully captures such a journey, where the author reflects on her initial worries and her heartfelt prayers to God, hoping for a boy to fulfill a personal dream of cheering on her son, perhaps one day an NBA player, from the sidelines with her authentic Nigerian accent. It’s important to acknowledge that the journey to parenthood, particularly for those expecting multiple children, can bring about a variety of feelings. Emotional struggles like crying for months, as the author shared, are more common than many think and highlight how complex and human the experience can be. The cultural nuances expressed—the desire and curiosity about having a son within the Nigerian American context—and debunking stereotypes around gender expectations underscore the evolving nature of family dreams and personal faith. The anticipation leading to the gender reveal is a universal experience that builds excitement and emotional investment. Receiving the blessed news of having a baby boy was met with joy and gratitude, symbolizing a precious gift beyond the confines of societal stereotypes. This reflects a mature understanding that children, regardless of gender, are blessings from God, and their arrival is timed perfectly by divine will. Welcoming Baby Zidayne Odinakachukwu Alexander, weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces and measuring 21 inches tall, brings not just happiness but also a renewed sense of purpose and family unity. This addition enriches the author's household and completes a unique chapter in their family story. For parents-to-be and families welcoming new children, it is comforting to know that mixed emotions are natural and can be overcome with faith and support. Embracing a child as a unique individual, while honoring cultural heritage and personal dreams, helps foster a loving and nurturing environment for the new arrival. Ultimately, this story encourages families to celebrate the beauty of life’s surprises and cherish every moment with their loved ones.
