Growing up in an African household, I often witnessed the distinct approach parents take when it comes to their children. The phrase "be friends with your kids," commonly heard in American parenting circles, can actually sound quite unusual to many African parents. This idea challenges deeply rooted cultural values where respect, discipline, and authority form the foundation of parent-child relationships. In many African cultures, the parent-child dynamic emphasizes guidance and structure more than friendship. Parents are expected to instill discipline to prepare their children for the realities of life, using their authority to shape behavior and decisions. Being "friends" with children might imply losing that respect or weakening the boundaries necessary for effective upbringing. However, this doesn't mean African parents are unloving or distant. On the contrary, the love is profound but often expressed differently—through sacrifice, hard work, and setting high expectations. There is a strong desire for children to succeed and respect elders, which is seen as a cornerstone for family honor and societal cohesion. Personally, balancing my cultural upbringing with modern parenting ideas has been a journey. I’ve learned it’s possible to maintain respect and authority while creating open communication channels, which foster trust without compromising discipline. Sharing experiences and being emotionally available can enhance relationships without diluting key cultural values. For parents navigating these cultural differences, it’s helpful to understand that "being friends with your kids" in the American sense doesn't mean abandoning parental roles.
