So many of you have been asking what I've been up to lately, and let me tell you, life has been an adventure, especially on the language front! One of my favorite 'latest projects' has been diving deep into teaching my wonderful gringo husband Spanish. It's not just about him understanding my family better, or us having a secret language (though that's a fun bonus!), but about bridging cultures and sharing a part of my heritage. You know, teaching a language can be hilarious! We've had so many moments where a simple word gets completely twisted. One of the biggest hurdles we've tackled recently involves those tricky little words and pronunciations that can be so confusing for native English speakers. For example, we spent a good chunk of time on 'Nunca' versus, what he sometimes misheard as, 'Unca'. 'Nunca', as many of you know, means 'Never'. It's a fundamental word in Spanish. But sometimes, when you're just starting out, little slips happen. My husband pointed out how close 'Nunca' could sound to 'Unca' when spoken quickly, and how confusing it could be to remember the exact opposite meaning. It's these small, often funny, mistakes that really stick in your mind and help you learn. We even made little notes, like 'Nunca = Never' and 'Unca = ever' (just for our own personal, slightly humorous memory aids, of course!) to keep things straight and laugh about the journey. My biggest tip for anyone teaching or learning a new language? Make it fun and don't be afraid to make mistakes! We practice daily, even if it's just a few phrases over coffee or while we're cooking. Consistency is absolutely key. We listen to Spanish music, watch shows with Spanish subtitles, and I try to speak to him in Spanish as much as possible, even if he responds in English at first. It’s all about creating an immersive environment and having a lot of patience. It's a beautiful journey watching him connect with a new language and culture, and it's definitely one of the 'latest' things bringing so much joy, and a lot of laughter, to our home.
