True Humility and Wisdom
God granted King Solomon, the great King of Israel, wisdom beyond measure. From this, King Solomon penned much of the book of Proverbs, providing insight and knowledge regarding right living before God.
Solomon begins the book of Proverbs with this statement:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
He repeats this truth later in the book:
“The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”
Proverbs 22:4 ESV
King Solomon had more riches than we can imagine. He was honored among the nations and had a full and prosperous life. We might not be kings, but the truth of this statement is timeless.
Hundreds of years later, Paul wrote a prayer for the Christians in his letter to the Ephesians that can provide context for Proverbs 22:4.
“…the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe … ”
Ephesians 1:17-19 ESV
His prayer teaches us that by coming to God and His Word with humility, God will give us spiritual wisdom and knowledge. And because of our faith in Him, God honors us and gives us riches that only come with belonging in Christ Jesus. He blesses us because of His great love.
It is through humility and a holy fear of God that we receive His promises of riches, honor, and life. Some of those promises will come to pass on earth, but all of them will be fulfilled when Jesus returns one day. And as we see the fulfillment of God’s promises, our response will be to give God the glory.
Reflecting on my own journey, I've found that embracing humility isn’t always easy, especially in a culture that prizes self-reliance. Yet, the wisdom shared in Proverbs and echoed in Ephesians has deeply resonated with me. When I began to acknowledge my dependence on God rather than solely on my own strength, I noticed a transformative shift in my perspective and life. The phrase from Proverbs 22:4, "The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life," goes beyond material wealth; it points to spiritual blessings and a profound sense of fulfillment. I have experienced moments where relying on God in challenging times brought unexpected peace and clarity—priceless riches that no earthly treasure can match. The encouragement to "practice being God-reliant instead of self-reliant," as mentioned in the article's images, struck a chord with me. Admitting our need for God's guidance is not weakness; it is a mark of true wisdom. By daily expressing this dependence through prayer and reading scripture, I have felt my "eyes enlightened," as Paul describes in Ephesians 1:18, helping me to grasp the hope and inheritance promised by God. Furthermore, humility opens the heart to receive instruction and correction, which I’ve found essential for personal growth. Rejecting pride and embracing a holy fear of God fosters a mindset receptive to wisdom. This ongoing process draws me closer to the life God desires for me—a life ultimately fulfilled when Christ returns. For anyone seeking deeper understanding and real transformation, I encourage nurturing humility and a reverent fear of the Lord. Such an attitude invites God’s spirit of wisdom and revelation, granting us treasures beyond the physical realm and a lasting legacy of honor and spiritual life.
