Don’t Be Surprised
There are some things that shouldn’t surprise us:
Winter blooming to life each spring.
The sun rising every morning.
Our ongoing need for food, water, air, and rest.
Change being an essential part of life.
Likewise, there’s no escaping the fact that life is messy and full of trouble. This beautiful world is fractured. But despite this, Jesus offers us hope:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
What “things” had Jesus just told His disciples?
He was honest about the grief and pain they’d endure but also about the future joy they’d experience. He was preparing their hearts for His death and their persecution but also for His resurrection and their salvation. Jesus’ encouragement to His disciples is also an encouragement to us…
We shouldn’t be surprised that this world is full of challenges—but Jesus is bigger than it all.
Following God doesn’t automatically erase the pain of the world—at least not yet. We still have injustice and evil to fight. But God has not left us to our own devices. We have not been abandoned to ourselves. We can trust in Him wholeheartedly as we wait for His return.
So, as you think about the trouble in your life—whether it’s your health, relationships, finances, or other difficulties—remember:
You can still have peace, you can still take heart, and you can still be comforted because Jesus Christ has already overcome the world!
Life can truly be a rollercoaster, can’t it? I've been there, feeling completely overwhelmed by the sheer messiness of it all – whether it's navigating tricky relationships, battling financial worries, or dealing with unexpected health issues. It sometimes feels like the world is constantly throwing curveballs, and honestly, it’s easy to feel surprised and disheartened by the sheer volume of troubles that come our way. But here’s something I’ve learned, something that truly clicked for me: the Bible never promised us an easy ride. In fact, John 16:33, a verse that has become a cornerstone for my peace, explicitly states: “In this world you will have tribulation.” It’s a powerful reminder that struggles aren't an anomaly; they're an expected part of the human experience. What makes all the difference, though, is the incredible promise that follows: “But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This truth, that God is bigger than it all, has been my anchor. When life gets messy, it's easy to get caught up in the chaos. I used to agonize over every setback, every disappointment. But understanding that Jesus has already overcome the world has shifted my perspective entirely. It doesn’t mean the problems disappear, but it means I don’t have to face them alone, and I don't have to be consumed by them. I’ve found that actively trusting in God's power to overcome the world and provide peace and protection amidst trouble is not just a comforting thought, but a practical strategy for daily living. So, what does this look like in practice when life feels undeniably messy? For me, it starts with deep breaths and remembering that powerful phrase: “BE ENCOURAGED.” It’s about consciously choosing to lean into faith rather than fear. When I’m facing a challenging situation, I often reread John 16:33 NKJV. It’s amazing how just those words can realign my focus. I then try to surrender my worries through prayer, acknowledging that while I don't have all the answers, God does. This isn't about being passive; it's about actively placing my trust in a higher power. Another practical step I've found incredibly helpful is connecting with my faith community or trusted friends. Sharing burdens lightens the load. Sometimes just voicing my struggles and hearing someone else say, “Yeah, life can be messy, but let’s pray about it,” makes a huge difference. It reminds me I'm not isolated in my struggles. And finally, I try to practice gratitude, even in the messy moments. Finding even small things to be thankful for helps me see beyond the immediate trouble and remember the overarching goodness and faithfulness of God.
