Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton

📖Plot Summary:

A collection of reflections and lessons about love — written in a very personal, memoir-style tone. This wasn’t quite what I expected. I thought it would be an advice-driven book about what love means, how to know when you’ve found “the one,” and all that. Instead, Dolly Alderton shares her twenties in raw detail — filled with funny and chaotic stories about friendship, heartbreak, drinking, dating, and all the growing pains that come with adulthood.

It honestly felt like having a heart-to-heart catch-up with a friend over coffee, or listening to a long, unfiltered podcast episode.

🤍My Thoughts:

I’ll be honest — it’s not a bad book, but it just wasn’t very relatable for me. Maybe because of her lifestyle — the partying, drinking, and casual hookups — it’s not something I connect with. I live a very simple, boring life, so I found myself reading it more as an observer than someone nodding in agreement.

Still, I appreciated the humor and the way she reflected on her mistakes with honesty. The part that really stayed with me was her realization at the end — that love comes in many forms. It’s not always romantic. It’s in the people who show up for you: your friends, your family, the ones who’ve been there through everything.

When she realizes that the love and stability she’d been searching for in relationships already existed in her friendship — that was truly wholesome. It tied the book together beautifully.

Definitely give this a read if you’re in your twenties or if you’ve ever lived that kind of fast, chaotic life. You might find yourself in her stories — or even redefine what love really means.

Thank you for reading till here! Sorry to keep you waiting and missing a post last week 🥹📝

... Read moreWhile many expect this book to offer traditional advice about romantic love, Dolly Alderton takes a refreshingly different approach by revealing the messy, authentic realities of growing up and forming meaningful connections. One aspect I appreciated was the emphasis on love as a multifaceted experience—not just romantic but found deeply in friendships and family bonds. This perspective felt especially relatable to anyone who's realized that stability and support often come from those around us rather than from fleeting romantic relationships. In addition, the memoir captures the chaotic yet formative experiences of the millennial generation, from partying and dating to the struggles of self-acceptance. If you’ve ever been through the rollercoaster of discovering who you are amidst external pressures and social expectations, Alderton’s storytelling will offer comfort and camaraderie. The book’s style is intimate, almost like an unfiltered chat with a close friend or an engaging podcast episode. It blends humor with poignant insights—a balance that makes the reflections easy to connect with, even if your lifestyle differs from Alderton’s. The vivid anecdotes and candid admissions add authenticity that many readers find refreshing in a genre often filled with polished advice. For those curious about the aesthetics and symbolism, the iconic yellow cover of the paperback edition is often highlighted online, symbolizing the warmth and cheerfulness embedded in Alderton’s narrative despite the book's emotional depth. In summary, whether you’re navigating your own tumultuous twenties or just seeking a heartfelt exploration of love and life’s complexities, "Everything I Know About Love" offers meaningful takeaways. It encourages readers to redefine what love means to them, emphasizing that it’s the people who truly show up that matter most.
