... Read moreHey everyone! I've been on a journey to truly reconnect with my authentic self lately, especially after realizing I'd been suppressing parts of myself for too long. It’s a common feeling, isn't it? Like you're living for others or just going through the motions, losing touch with who you really are. But finding my way back to my 'higher self' has been incredibly transformative, and I wanted to share some steps and insights that truly helped me after prolonged self-suppression. For me, self-suppression often stemmed from wanting to fit in, avoiding conflict, or simply not knowing who I truly was outside of external expectations. It's like dimming your own light to make others feel more comfortable. The first crucial step for me was just acknowledging it. I picked up my journal and asked myself, 'What are the ways that I am neglecting myself and my needs?' This journal prompt was a huge wake-up call. Writing down every instance where I was putting others' desires before my own, or ignoring my inner voice, truly opened my eyes to how much I had been holding back. It felt like a massive release just to put it on paper. Once I started to see where I was neglecting myself, the next step naturally became to actively seek out joy and what genuinely makes me feel alive. Another amazing prompt I used was: 'What part of my life am I the most happy? Where do I find the most enjoyment? Who am I with?' This wasn't about chasing grand, elaborate experiences, but often about identifying small, simple things that bring a spark to my day. It could be a quiet morning with my coffee, listening to a specific type of music that moves my soul, or spending time with a friend who truly 'gets' me. Identifying these moments and intentionally creating more of them helped me rebuild my sense of self and remember what truly nourishes me. Our bodies are incredibly wise, and I learned to pay attention to their subtle signals. The prompt, 'How does my body signal to me that it feels safe vs. unsafe?' became an incredibly important tool. Sometimes, a tight chest, a tense jaw, or a knot in my stomach told me something wasn't right, even if my mind tried to rationalize it away. Conversely, a relaxed feeling, a sense of lightness, or an open heart showed me when I was truly aligned with my authentic self. This newfound body awareness helped me set healthier boundaries, make choices that honored my well-being, and trust my intuition more deeply. While these 3 journal prompts were foundational, reconnecting to my authentic self is a holistic journey. Beyond journaling, I also found mindfulness meditation incredibly grounding, even just 10 minutes a day. Learning to say 'no' without guilt was a massive breakthrough for me – I started recognizing that setting boundaries isn't selfish, it's self-care. Practicing self-compassion, treating myself with the same kindness and understanding I'd offer a dear friend, also made a significant difference. And sometimes, just sharing my struggles and discoveries with a trusted friend or therapist felt like a huge release, affirming that I wasn't alone. It’s about slowly, gently chipping away at the layers of self-suppression. Reconnecting with your higher self isn't a one-time event; it's an ongoing journey of self-discovery and gentle adjustments. There will be days when you feel more aligned than others, and that's perfectly okay. The key is to keep coming back to yourself, to keep asking these vital questions, and to trust that your authentic self is always there, waiting to be rediscovered beneath the layers of expectation and suppression.
