Having a yarn store credit card is dangerous

... Read moreAs someone who loves crocheting and knitting, I completely understand the temptation that comes with owning a credit card tied to a yarn or craft store like Michael's. While having access to exclusive discounts and promotions sounds great, it can also unintentionally encourage overspending on yarn and materials you might not immediately need. My first experience with a yarn store credit card opened my eyes to just how quickly purchases can add up. From the Caron Slice of Anniversary Cakes yarn in a beautiful prismatic color, to patterned Cotton yarns and Bernat Blanket Patchwork yarn packs, it was so easy to add several items to my cart. Before I knew it, my order subtotal reached nearly $194, with taxes adding considerably to the total. Despite feeling excited about the haul, looking back, I realized I had bought more than what I initially planned. One useful tip to avoid this trap is setting a strict monthly budget for craft supplies, and only purchasing items that fit within that limit. Also, keeping a wishlist of projects ahead of time helps prioritize the yarn and materials you truly need. I find it helpful to track how much I've spent on yarn each month, so I’m more mindful of my habits. Additionally, researching yarn substitutes or waiting for sales outside of credit card offers can sometimes save you more money in the long run than simply relying on store credit card perks. At the end of the day, owning a yarn store credit card isn’t inherently bad, but it demands a mindful approach. By creating personal spending limits and planning your projects carefully, you can enjoy the benefits without falling into overspending pitfalls. Remember, crafting is about creativity and joy, so keeping your finances healthy will only enhance your crafting journey.
