Week 1 Renovation: Hacking Works

Hello 🍋s!!!

We’re so excited that we’re finally in the midst of our renovation! I’ll be bringing you along on our reno journey so you can get a better glimpse of what each process and milestone looks like!

For Week 1 of our renovation, we completed one of the major works in the house and that is hacking! 🛠️

Prior to hacking, we encountered some unforeseen circumstances that pushed back our starting date. If I could turn back time, I definitely would’ve started some of the processes earlier!

The delay was mainly because the wall we were planning to hack required PE approval, which took some additional time. Do factor in some buffer time if you’re unsure whether the walls you’re planning to hack will require PE approval as well.

Sharing our timeline below for the HDB and PE application turnaround:

20 Jul: Applied for hacking to commence on 3 Aug

28 Jul: HDB replied that PE was required at a $480 cost (different walls have different prices)

29 Jul: Resubmitted application

31 Jul: PE approved

7 Aug: HDB approved for works to start on 13 Aug

We started right on 13 Aug, and the hacking itself only took about 1–2 days! 🙌🏻

Dust instantly filled up the house once the works commenced 😂 But renovations are a dirty and messy process after all, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, because this is the home we’re gonna be building. ❤️ That’s it for this very short post! Stay tuned for Week 2 of our reno journey, or you can always hop over to IG @/zengmyhome for the latest updates! 🏠

... Read moreFrom my own experience with home renovations, the hacking phase is one of the most critical yet overlooked steps that sets the tone for the entire project. It's exciting to see walls being taken down because it symbolizes the transformation of your space — but it can quickly turn overwhelming without proper planning. One of the key takeaways is understanding the need for Professional Engineer (PE) approval, especially in HDB flats where structural walls are involved. As shared, the delay caused by awaiting PE approval added almost two weeks to the schedule and additional costs of around $480. My advice is to start consultations with engineers or contractors early to determine which walls require this approval to avoid last-minute setbacks. Preparing for the hacking works also means protecting your home adequately. Installing floor protection and sealing off work areas can minimize dust spreading, which tends to fill every corner of your home once the demolition begins. Personal experience taught me to keep cleaning supplies handy and plan alternative spaces in your home for daily activities. This not only helps you stay comfortable but also reduces stress amid the mess. The actual hacking can be fast, typically one to two days, but the impact lasts longer. Expect noises, vibrations, and the need to coordinate garbage disposal promptly. If you’re removing walls like the oversized one between the kitchen and dry pantry, as in this renovation, be ready for changes in room flow and layout that might require new furnishing arrangements later. Finally, embracing the dust and chaos as part of building your future home helps maintain a positive mindset. Capturing these early renovation moments in photos or videos lets you track progress and appreciate the transformation journey. Make sure to follow renovation updates on social media platforms or blogs, as seeing others’ real-life experiences can provide practical advice and emotional support throughout your own renovation adventure.

we spent HOW MUCH on hacking?! 😵
hacking sounds dramatic (and expensive), so we wanted to share the real numbers behind ours, all in the spirit of cost transparency in this industry! slightly under 10% of our total renovation cost went into hacking — but that’s not the full picture, so here’s what to keep in mind 👇 🔨 hackin
