Don’t sit and wait when people tell you know, get up and build up.

I learned this lesson firsthand: instead of waiting for photographers or clients to come my way, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I reached out to local photographers to collaborate, even offering to do free makeup work, but faced multiple rejections. However, rather than giving up, I used this time to create my own portfolio by taking photos of my work myself. This self-made approach allowed me to showcase my skills without relying on others.
Building your portfolio independently not only demonstrates determination but also gives you full control over how your work is presented. Over time, the images I created helped me gain recognition, including winning an Editorial Makeup award at the One Shot Hair Awards. This achievement reinforced that creating opportunities, instead of waiting for them, can lead to significant growth.
For those starting in makeup or hairstyling, consider investing in your own resourcefulness—practice your craft daily, photograph your work, and share it on platforms where potential clients or collaborators can see. Proactively reaching out, even when the initial response is negative, combined with self-driven portfolio development, can set you apart in the industry.
Remember, success often comes from the courage to build your own path amid challenges, turning rejection into motivation. This mindset not only enhances your skills but also boosts confidence, making you ready to seize bigger opportunities when they come along.
