I know she would hate for me to be thinking about this today but the days that I’m feeling the proudest or happiest are the days I miss her the most.
Celebrating personal milestones can often evoke a complex mix of emotions, especially when a loved one is no longer physically present to share the joy. From my experience, building something meaningful—like setting up a two-chair studio—felt incredibly rewarding, yet at the same time, it highlighted the absence of my mother. I would have loved to call her and share the news, hearing her encouragement and excitement. This duality of feeling proud and missing someone deeply is something many people encounter. It reminds us how closely happiness and grief can coexist. Sharing these moments with friends or journaling my thoughts helped me process these feelings and find some comfort. I also discovered that creating small rituals, like dedicating time to reflect on those we miss during our achievements or keeping a personal memento from them in our workspace, can make the experience more healing. For anyone in a similar situation, remember that it’s okay to hold space for both pride and sorrow. These emotions are part of the ongoing journey of honoring those who’ve influenced our lives while continuing to grow and achieve our dreams.
