Why I’m moving out of my first college apartment

Ok there were a lot of things that contributed to me not releasing at this apartment. I had two roommates one who I loved while the other made my life a living hell. They were also in the process of renovating the pool when I toured but ensured me it would be finished by the time I moved in… 1 year later and still no pool. I did absolutely loveee my kitchen but I of course ended up with the room right by the stairwell with a lovely view of a wall and the sounds of people coming home at 3am. Another downside is the apartment is surrounded by frat houses and you most certainly hear everything. I also had so many maintenance issues from my AC leaking and shutting off in the hottest month to the lock not working and no one answering the emergency lockout line. I can’t wait to officially move out and into my new apartment for the next school year!

... Read moreWhen I first moved into my own place, I quickly realized that adulting meant a lot more than just decorating! One of the biggest learning curves was definitely keeping the place clean, especially dealing with all the unexpected messes. From mysterious stains appearing on the carpet (hello, college life!) to the dreaded mold and mildew that seem to pop up out of nowhere, it felt like a constant battle. But don't worry, I've picked up some hacks that I wish someone told me when I was first figuring things out. Let's talk about those stubborn bathroom stains and the potential for mold. My AC unit once leaked, and it made me realize how quickly dampness can turn into a problem. For mold and mildew removal, especially in damp areas like the bathroom or around an AC leak, many people reach for Clorox. It's effective, but you absolutely have to be careful! Always ensure the area is well-ventilated – open windows, turn on a fan. Wear gloves and eye protection. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, especially ammonia-based ones, as it creates toxic fumes. For general mold on non-porous surfaces, a diluted bleach solution (about 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water) can work wonders. Spray it on, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly. For tough stains on bathroom tiles, a Clorox bleach cleaner can be a lifesaver. Apply it directly to the stained area, let it penetrate for a few minutes (check the product label for specific times), then scrub with a brush and rinse well. Those orange stains in the hallways were a nightmare, and while bleach might not be ideal for carpet, the principle of targeted cleaning is key for tiles and grout. Another big concern, especially in a first apartment, is keeping allergens at bay, and disinfecting wipes are super handy for quick clean-ups. If you or your roommates have allergies, choosing the right wipes makes a huge difference. While popular brands like Lysol and Clorox wipes are great for killing germs, some people find their strong scents or chemicals can trigger sensitivities. For allergy prevention, I've found brands like Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes or Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaning Wipes to be gentler options. Seventh Generation uses botanically derived ingredients like thymol, which is a natural disinfectant, and they're usually free from harsh synthetic fragrances and dyes. Mrs. Meyer’s also uses plant-derived ingredients and essential oils for scent, which can be less irritating for some. When using any wipe, make sure to wipe down high-touch surfaces regularly – doorknobs, light switches, countertops, and even that shared kitchen island. Let the surface stay wet for the recommended contact time (usually a few minutes) to ensure proper disinfection, then let it air dry. It’s a simple step, but it makes a huge difference in keeping your living space fresh and helping everyone breathe a little easier. Beyond specific products, establishing a regular cleaning routine in your first apartment is crucial. Small, consistent efforts prevent those big, overwhelming messes. Don't let things pile up, and always read the labels on your cleaning products! Knowing what's in them and how to use them safely is key to both an effective clean and your well-being. Trust me, a clean space can seriously improve your mood, even if your room is right by the stairwell with a squeaky door!
