BOOK REVIEW 📚💕 #BlackGirlMagic

good morning lemon 8! ✨

today’s blog post is about the second book that i am currently reading and am midway through ☺️!

BOOK 📕 : “Reclaiming our Space” by Feminista Jones

i recommend this read 📖 for anyone who is interested in topics such as: black women 👸🏾, black feminism, feminism, social media ✨, sociology, race and gender studies, and humanities 😊

i listed what i like about this read below 😊⬇️

1. this book discusses issues pertaining to black women , and the lack of advocacy for the Black women community. The author Feminista Jones discusses topics of sexuality, black girl magic, stereotypes like “AnGrY bLack WoMan 😡” “mammies & matriarchy 🫤” and “wElfAre Queen”

2. this is an amazing read because the Author uses a Black feminist intersectional perspective, but she also mentions her advocacy comes from outside of academia 📖😊. she is an advocate and a black feminist despite the fact that she didn’t go to college. Jones discusses that lived experiences from Black women are important to studies and advocacy for Black women ✨.

3. Feminista jones discusses twitter and the impact that Black women have on platforms like twitter. Jones mentions that a lot of Black women advocacy occurs on twitter, and through hashtag movements which Jones defines as Hashtag feminism #️⃣💕. Because Black women are often excluded from academia, and academic sources, social media in particularly twitter, is a place for Black women to talk about oppressions, microaggressions, shared and unique experiences they’ve had with gender and racial bias 🤝🏾

i am almost finished with this book, and i even cited it for one of my research papers 📄. if you can, i definitely recommend getting your hands on this book! it has such an interesting take on social media, black feminism, and black women issues 🩷

... Read moreWhen I first picked up 'Reclaiming Our Space' by Feminista Jones, I was curious about how she would tackle such a vital topic. What quickly became clear is that this isn't just a book about Black women; it's a testament to our resilience and ingenuity in carving out spaces where our voices are heard and valued. It truly felt like a conversation with a wise friend, opening my eyes to new perspectives and strengthening my resolve to support and celebrate Black women's voices. One of the most impactful sections for me was understanding 'hashtag feminism.' It’s more than just trending topics; it’s a powerful, grassroots movement where Black women, often excluded from traditional academic or media platforms, create their own narratives. Think about how a hashtag can transform a personal experience into a collective call to action, fostering solidarity and driving real-world change. Jones masterfully illustrates how these digital spaces become vital for discussing microaggressions, sharing triumphs, and challenging systemic biases. It’s about leveraging online spaces to fuel offline action, ensuring that the conversations started in tweets translate into tangible progress in our communities. The book brilliantly dissects harmful stereotypes like the 'Angry Black Woman' or the 'Welfare Queen,' showing how these caricatures not only misrepresent but actively harm. It makes you realize how deeply ingrained these narratives are and how crucial it is to reclaim our space by redefining who we are, on our own terms. This ties directly into the idea of 'Black Girl Magic' – which isn't just a catchy phrase but a profound recognition of the inherent power, creativity, and strength within Black womanhood, as explored in Chapter 6, making you feel seen and celebrated. What truly resonated was Jones' emphasis on lived experiences over purely academic perspectives. She reminds us that knowledge isn't confined to ivory towers; the everyday realities and wisdom of Black women are invaluable. This is why platforms like Twitter become so important – they democratize dialogue, giving a stage to those whose stories have historically been overlooked. It empowers individuals to become their own advocates and scholars of their own lives. For anyone wondering how to apply the insights from 'Reclaiming Our Space,' I'd say start by critically examining the narratives around you. How are Black women portrayed in media? How can you amplify authentic voices? This book is a call to action, encouraging us to not just consume information but to actively participate in shaping a more inclusive and equitable world. It’s a powerful tool for self-reflection and community building, making you feel understood while equipping you to understand others better too. It really helped me recognize the subtle ways I can contribute to this ongoing fight for visibility and respect, whether through my interactions online or in real life. Ultimately, 'Reclaiming Our Space' isn't just a book; it's a movement captured in print. It's about recognizing the profound impact Black feminists have had, and continue to have, in shaping conversations from the 'Tweets to the Streets,' pushing for a more just and equitable society for all.
