We are our biggest supporters

Many of you might know me as Misstalusaboutit, and if you're new here, welcome! My journey through podiatry school in Philadelphia has been a rollercoaster, filled with incredible highs and, let's be honest, some pretty humbling lows. I wanted to dive deeper into something I truly believe: we are our biggest supporters. It's a philosophy born out of real-life experiences and the daily grind of medical education. I recently shared a very raw moment from July 25, 2024, when I found out I failed my first board exam. Sitting there, seeing patients, and feeling that crushing disappointment was one of the hardest moments. I remember looking in the mirror and asking myself, "Can I even make it through this anymore?" It's easy to feel utterly defeated when faced with such a setback, especially when you've poured so much into your studies. That day, I was so tired, both mentally and emotionally. The weight of expectations, both from myself and others, felt immense. It’s a feeling I know many students, particularly in demanding fields like medicine, can relate to. But then, something shifted. I looked in the mirror again and told myself, "I don't know how I'll do it, but I'll get it done." This wasn't some magical fix, but a deliberate decision to reclaim my narrative. It meant taking a hard look at my study methods, seeking out resources, and most importantly, practicing self-compassion. By September 9, 2024, I was back on track, proving that you get up every single time. That journey from despair to determination is what shapes us, far more than any single test score. This experience is exactly why I'm so passionate about advocating for struggling students and being transparent about the realities of medical education. It’s not always glamorous, and it’s definitely not always easy. We often see only the polished success stories, but behind every achievement are countless hours of doubt, hard work, and sometimes, failure. My goal is to show you the whole picture, the messiness along with the triumphs, because it’s in those moments of struggle that we truly grow. It’s about creating a space where it's okay to not be okay, and to find the strength to keep pushing forward. So, what does it truly mean to be your own biggest supporter? For me, it's about cultivating resilience, practicing self-compassion, and understanding that setbacks are not roadblocks, but opportunities for growth. It means celebrating small victories, even just getting through a tough week. It’s about building a strong support system around you, but also knowing that the ultimate strength comes from within. Don't let a single failure define your entire journey. It's a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. Remember, your unique path is valid, and your resilience is your superpower.
