Wow, if you're ever planning a trip down the California coast, you absolutely cannot miss the 17 Mile Scenic Drive! I recently took this iconic route, and it was truly one of the highlights of my journey through Big Sur, California. Many people ask if the 17 Mile Drive is actually in Big Sur, and while it’s not strictly part of the Big Sur coastline, it’s just a short drive north on the Monterey Peninsula, making it a perfect addition to any Big Sur adventure. I found it to be a fantastic way to experience a different kind of coastal beauty. It's truly a unique experience, separate from the more rugged, untamed beauty of Big Sur itself, yet offering equally stunning panoramas. So, what should you expect when you embark on this picturesque journey? First off, there's a small entrance fee (around $11.50 per vehicle when I last visited, but always check current rates!). You can enter from several gates, but I found the Pacific Grove gate to be a good starting point as it immediately plunges you into the scenic beauty. They'll hand you a detailed map at the gate, which is super helpful for navigating the winding roads and ensuring you don't miss any of the famous spots. My absolute favorite stops were the Lone Cypress, which is just breathtaking, perched dramatically on its rocky outcrop – it feels like a postcard come to life! Bird Rock was another highlight, where you can see tons of sea lions, harbor seals, and various seabirds basking in the sun; it’s a wildlife photographer's dream. Spanish Bay was also lovely for a quick stroll on the beach, offering serene views and the sound of waves crashing. As you drive, you'll pass the stunning, meticulously manicured golf courses of Pebble Beach – even if you're not a golfer, the verdant greens against the blue ocean are an incredible sight! I spent a leisurely 2-3 hours completing the drive, taking my time to stop at all the overlooks and really soak it all in, but you could easily spend half a day if you linger at each point. For anyone planning a Big Sur to 17 Mile Drive itinerary, I'd strongly recommend doing the 17 Mile Drive either on your way down to Big Sur or on your way back north. It’s a beautifully maintained private road, offering a more manicured, yet equally stunning, coastal experience compared to the wilder Highway 1 stretch through Big Sur. To make the most of it, I’d suggest going on a clear day if possible, as the views are truly spectacular when the sun is out. Don't rush it; bring your camera, maybe some snacks and water, and definitely allow plenty of time for photo stops and simply enjoying the moment. It’s a different vibe from the famous Bixby Bridge or McWay Falls, but equally captivating and a worthy detour. Trust me, it's worth every penny and every minute for those unforgettable Pacific views and the feeling of experiencing a truly special part of California's coast!
