Starting oil painting as a beginner can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, it becomes an enjoyable and rewarding experience. One of the first steps I took was gathering basic supplies such as a set of good quality oil paints, a variety of brushes, canvas panels, and a palette for mixing colors. Understanding the importance of proper materials helped me avoid frustration early on. I found that beginning with simple subjects like flowers, landscapes, or still life objects allowed me to focus on mastering brush strokes and color blending without feeling pressured to capture intricate details. Using reference photos or setting up a small still life at home also made painting more approachable. Another key tip is to practice layering using the 'fat over lean' technique, which means applying thicker paint layers over thinner layers to help the painting dry properly and avoid cracking. Starting with muted tones and gradually adding highlights improved the final look of my artwork. Most importantly, patience and embracing mistakes as part of the learning process helped me stay motivated. Experimenting with different brush techniques and color combinations allowed me to discover my personal style.
