I had foot surgery 6 weeks ago, and I do PT on the rug in our apartment. To keep it clean, we set a simple shoes-off (or shoe-cover) rule. We even put a bench by the door, slippers in all sizes, and disposable covers for anyone who doesn’t want to take their shoes off.
Everyone’s been fine with it—except my father-in-law. He says it’s “rude” to tell guests what to do, refuses covers because they’re “demeaning,” and last time he tracked mud all over the rug. I finally told him: I want him to visit, but if he won’t follow the rule, we’ll just meet at his place or go out.
Now he’s saying I “banned” him from our home, and my husband thinks I embarrassed him. But honestly, the rule applies to everyone, even delivery drivers. Am I being too strict, or is he just refusing to respect a basic boundary?

“rude to tell guests what to do” … you mean HOUSE RULES??? i’m sure you have/had your own.
