Husband vs me: new pet fight
Our family dog of 13 years just passed a week ago. My husband decided without talking to me that our 5yo son is getting a bearded dragon. I came home to a giant tank, lamps, and supplies already sitting in my son’s tiny room.
When I brought up my concerns like the lifespan, diet of live bugs, tank cleaning, and placement, my husband blew up and called me disrespectful. Now whenever our son asks, he throws me under the bus saying I’m the one being “cruel” and stopping it. Meanwhile, he keeps ordering tank decorations and hyping our son up even more.
I feel blindsided. It’s not fair to make a big family decision like this without my input. It feels disrespectful to me and unfair to our son to promise him something that wasn’t discussed.
Am I wrong for pushing back, or is my husband the one being unreasonable here?
Oh my goodness, I completely relate to how you're feeling right now! Losing a beloved family dog after 13 years is heartbreaking, and the grief alone is overwhelming. To then come home to a unilateral decision about a whole new pet, especially one with such specific needs like a bearded dragon, would leave anyone feeling blindsided and disrespected. It's not just about the pet; it's about the trust and partnership in a marriage. I truly believe that bringing a new pet into the family, especially after such a significant loss, should be a joint decision. It’s not just a purchase; it’s a living creature becoming part of your home and daily life. You mentioned concerns about lifespan, diet of live bugs, and tank cleaning – these are legitimate, practical considerations that impact everyone in the household. A bearded dragon, for example, isn't just a cute, cuddly pet. They require consistent care, specific lighting, temperature controls, and yes, live insect diets, which can be a big commitment, both financially and time-wise. These are exactly the kinds of things a couple should discuss beforehand to ensure everyone is on board and prepared for the responsibilities. It sounds like your husband might be trying to fill a void for your son after losing the dog, which is understandable, but his approach of making such a big decision alone and then 'throwing you under the bus' is completely unfair. This kind of situation can really fuel a 'husband and wife fighting over a new pet' scenario, and it's so important to address it constructively. When disagreements arise, especially around pets or children, open communication is key. Instead of one person making all the decisions, try to schedule a calm, honest conversation. Express your feelings using "I" statements – "I feel disrespected when such a big decision is made without my input," or "I'm worried about the commitment of a bearded dragon given our recent loss and the specific care it needs." Maybe suggest researching the pet together, or even fostering a different animal to see if it's the right fit for the family's current emotional state and lifestyle. Sometimes, bringing in a neutral third party, like a trusted friend or family member, can help mediate if discussions keep escalating into arguments. It's absolutely okay to push back when you feel a boundary has been crossed or a significant family decision is being made without your consent. Your feelings are valid. You're not being cruel; you're advocating for thoughtful decision-making and respect within your marriage. This isn't just about a new pet; it's about the foundation of your partnership. Many couples face similar 'fights' over pet choices, and finding a way to communicate and compromise is essential for the health of both the family and any new furry, scaly, or feathery member.

He’s being a douche and using your child against you which is insane. I’d have a hard conversation and be transparent with him of how unacceptable his behavior is
