She’s not his mom 😒

my relationship with my MIL has always been… complicated. She’s polite on the surface, but constantly takes little digs at me subtle things that outsiders wouldn’t catch but I always notice.

When my son was born, she wanted to be called “MaCo” (short for Mama Cornelia). I didn’t love it, but I went along with it because I wanted to keep the peace. Recently though, my husband took our son to visit her and now he’s calling her “Momma Cornelia.”

That crossed a line for me. There’s only one Momma in his life me. It feels intentional, like she’s slowly pushing a boundary to see how far she can go.

My husband understands how I feel but doesn’t want to confront her. I don’t want to be petty, but I also don’t want to let this slide.

Would you say something or just let it go?

... Read moreNavigating family dynamics, especially involving in-laws, can often be challenging and emotional. When a mother-in-law wants to be called "Momma Cornelia," it taps deeply into the natural protective instincts a mother feels. Setting boundaries is essential, but approaching the situation thoughtfully helps maintain family harmony while upholding your position as your child's mom. Many find that early, calm conversations about titles and roles can prevent misunderstandings. Expressing feelings honestly without blame encourages openness. You might say something like, "I appreciate how close you want to be with our son, but to me, being his mom is very special, and I'd like to keep that title for myself." It's also important to recognize that subtle digs from your MIL may stem from her own desires for connection or acceptance. Showing empathy while holding firm boundaries can sometimes transform the relationship positively. If your husband feels uncomfortable confronting his mother, involving him gently in the conversation ensures you both present a united front. It prevents miscommunication and reinforces that your family’s emotional well-being is a shared priority. Remember, you are not being petty by wanting to protect your identity as your son's mom. This identity is unique and important, and it’s reasonable to preserve it respectfully. At the same time, offering your MIL other meaningful roles—like a beloved grandma or "MaCo" nickname, if acceptable—can help her feel valued. Overall, trust your instincts, communicate clearly, and seek a balance that keeps your family relationships healthy and respectful. You need to say something. She is not his mother. All she’s doing is confusing him. Your husband needs to stand up to his own mom and say something. This behavior is outrageous and not okay.
