When MIL Polices Your Daughter’s Toys
Would you say something if your MIL told your daughter she couldn’t play with “boy toys”? Because mine did, and I still can’t get over it.
Context: My 4-year-old is obsessed with Spider-Man—jackets, costumes, the whole vibe. My MIL first saw her in the outfit and said, “Don’t you think you’d like Wonder Woman more?” My daughter had no idea who that was.
Fast forward: my daughter sees a warrior toy and wants to play. My MIL says, “No, only boys can play with that.” I lost it and said, “She can play with whatever she wants, gender doesn’t matter.” Everyone else stared like I was the crazy one.
Should I have just let it slide? Should I be limiting her contact with my MIL? I just want my daughters to feel free to explore anything they like without judgment or limits.
Parents, what would you do in this situation? I really need advice on handling MILs with outdated views.
