this is my wash day routine! typically, i’ll style my hair everyday or every 2 days, however, i was about 1-2 times a week. Here is my routine:

My Routine

Hair type: 3b curls + dry hair

Step 1: Double shampoo my hair and then apply my hair mask

Step 2: Follow up with conditioner and wash everything out completely

Step 3: With soaking wet hair, apply a quarter size of curl cream into hand and spread evenly through hair, I like to brush it through my hair

Step 4: Take curl gel and scrunch into hair. Follow up with taking my t-shirt and scrunching my hair

Step 5: Take cotton or silk t-shirt and wrap hair for 10-15 minutes to soak up some water

Step 6: Let air dry and done!

🌟Haircare Tips: Make sure to ALWAYS brush and style your hair while it is soaking wet. You should never try and style curly hair if it is dry.

My wash day routine has become a sacred ritual, especially when my hair is looking like a '5 days unwashed' mess and I just need to 'fix this mess'! Here are some extra tips I’ve picked up that have truly transformed my 'curly hair wash day routine' into a dream. First, let's talk about pre-wash detangling. Before even stepping into the shower, especially if my hair has been up for a few days, I like to gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb or my fingers while my hair is dry or slightly damp. Sometimes, I’ll even apply a lightweight oil or a conditioning treatment as a pre-poo to help loosen knots and add an extra layer of moisture before shampooing. This makes the shampooing process much smoother and reduces breakage, leading to healthier, more 'defined curly hair' in the long run. When it comes to shampooing, the 'double shampoo' method is a game-changer for me. The first wash usually tackles the product buildup and dirt, while the second truly cleanses my scalp. I focus on massaging my scalp gently with my fingertips to stimulate blood flow and ensure all impurities are lifted. After rinsing, applying a rich hair mask is essential for my dry hair. I leave it on for at least 15-20 minutes, sometimes even longer, while I finish the rest of my shower. This deep conditioning step is crucial for infusing moisture back into my curls, making them feel 'so clean!' and soft. Remember to fully rinse out your conditioner to avoid product buildup that can weigh down your beautiful curls. Now, for styling – this is where the magic really happens for 'wet curly hair routine' success. The original tip about brushing and styling only while soaking wet is something I live by. I actually keep a spray bottle in the bathroom to re-wet sections if they start to dry out. When applying curl cream, I ensure it's evenly distributed from root to tip, focusing on coating every strand. Then, after applying curl gel, instead of just scrunching, I sometimes use a technique called 'rake and shake' or 'clumping' to encourage larger, more defined curl families. This helps create those beautiful, juicy 'defined curly hair' clumps that last. Finally, drying techniques can make all the difference. While air drying works wonderfully, I've found that how I remove excess water is key. Beyond just wrapping my hair in a t-shirt for 10-15 minutes (also known as 'plopping'), sometimes I'll use a technique called 'micro-plopping' where I gently scrunch sections of my hair with the t-shirt to absorb more water without disturbing the curl pattern. This significantly cuts down on air drying time, and helps with frizz. If I'm in a rush, I will gently diffuse on a low heat and low speed setting, holding the diffuser cup up to my scalp and then moving down the lengths. This helps set the curls without causing frizz. The OCR mentions 'after 1 hour (1/3 dry)' and 'after 3 hours (fully dry)', which is a realistic timeline for air drying, but diffusing can speed that up considerably for those 'time to style' moments.
