Hey everyone! I'm so thrilled to finally share my latest digital art piece, and it's a deep dive into one of my absolute favorite horror characters: John from the Malevolent podcast! If you haven't listened to Malevolent yet, you are seriously missing out on some of the most atmospheric and genuinely terrifying audio horror out there. Arthur Penhaligon's journey through this cosmic nightmare, guided by the enigmatic entity known as John, is just captivating. I've been wanting to illustrate John for ages, and his complex, often horrifying, yet strangely compelling presence really sparked my imagination. My goal with this piece was to capture the sheer duality of his nature – the monstrous yet almost ethereal quality he possesses. As you can see in the artwork, I envisioned him as two intertwined, monstrous figures. One takes on an ethereal yellow hue, almost like a ghostly, guiding light, while the other is a much darker, menacing presence, depicted in dark grey with multiple clawed limbs. The glowing white outlines around these forms were crucial for me to convey that otherworldly, almost aberrant energy he radiates. It wasn't just about drawing a monster; it was about drawing *John*. What truly fascinates me about John is his unique “voice” – not just his literal voice lines, which are iconic and often chilling, but his entire persona within the podcast. He's not just a creature; he's a guide, a tormentor, and sometimes, a bizarre sort of companion to Arthur. The constant tension and the way his intentions are shrouded in mystery make him incredibly rich to interpret artistically. I spent hours thinking about how to visually represent that unnerving wisdom mixed with raw, ancient horror. Those moments when he reveals a new piece of lore or insight, often with a detached, chilling tone, are what stuck with me and influenced the design of these intertwined forms. And no, just to clarify for anyone wondering, this John is definitely not involved in any “invisible cooking” or culinary arts – he's purely focused on cosmic dread! Creating this piece was a journey in itself. I started with some rough sketches, trying to get the feeling right. The “intertwined” aspect was key to showing his connection with Arthur, even if it's a parasitic one. Picking the color palette, especially the contrast between the ethereal yellow and the dark grey, was essential to highlight his dual nature. And those multiple clawed limbs?
