I reached out to Olay for PR. Even though they don't have anything at the moment, they responded by sending me a partnership interest form. I'm proud of myself for taking the first step in my content content journey! 🍋🍋
My journey to collaborate with brands officially kicked off when I sent my very first DM for PR, and guess what? I got a response from Olay with a partnership interest form! If you're new to the creator world like I am, you might be asking: What exactly is ‘DM for PR and collaboration’ and how do you even start? What Does ‘DM for PR’ Actually Mean? Essentially, sending a DM (Direct Message) for PR or collaboration means directly reaching out to brands via social media platforms (like Instagram, TikTok, or X) to pitch yourself as a content creator. You're offering to promote their products or services to your audience in exchange for free products, payment, or other forms of collaboration. It’s a direct, often less formal way to initiate contact compared to traditional email outreach, especially beneficial for newer creators looking to get their foot in the door. Why DMing Brands Can Be Effective (Especially for Your First Time!) For a first-time outreach, a well-crafted DM can be incredibly effective. It’s personal, direct, and often stands out in a brand’s inbox compared to a sea of emails. Many brands, especially those active on social media, have community managers who monitor DMs specifically for collaboration opportunities. My initial message to Olay, sent via Instagram chat, was quite simple but clearly stated my interest as a passionate creator and my desire to showcase their products to my followers. I made sure to be polite, professional, and to the point. Crafting Your First Effective DM for Collaboration: Be Clear and Concise: Brands are busy! Get straight to the point. Introduce yourself briefly. Introduce Yourself as a Creator: Mention your niche and what kind of content you create. For example, “Hi, I’m a passionate beauty creator on [platform] with [X] followers…” You don't need massive follower counts; authenticity and engagement matter more! Show Genuine Interest: Don't just ask for free stuff. Explain why you love their brand or a specific product. For instance, “I’ve been a long-time user of your Olay Regenerist line and would love to showcase its benefits to my audience.” This shows you’ve done your homework. Highlight Your Value Proposition: What can you offer them? Will you create engaging Reels, beautiful photo carousels, or detailed reviews? Mention how you can help them reach a new audience or create authentic content. Provide Key Information & Call to Action: Briefly share your main platform and average engagement if it's impressive. Then, state what you're looking for – “I’d love to discuss potential collaboration opportunities. Would you be open to a partnership, or could you direct me to the right contact person?” My DM led to Olay providing a ‘Partnership Interest’ message with a link to a form, which typically asks for email and social media handles. Finding Brands to DM for PR: Start with Brands You Already Use & Love: Authenticity is key. It’s easier to pitch a brand you genuinely endorse. Look for Smaller or Niche Brands: They might be more accessible and actively seeking creators. Check Their Social Media: Do they already collaborate with creators? Look at their tagged posts or who they follow. What to Expect After You Send Your DM: Not every DM will get a reply, and that’s okay! Rejection or no response is part of the game. My experience with Olay, getting an actual partnership form, was incredibly encouraging. It's a positive sign that they're interested in learning more about me and my content. It means your initial message was effective enough to get noticed. Fill out those forms thoroughly, and be patient! Remember, every ‘no’ brings you closer to a ‘yes’ and taking that first step, like I did, is the biggest win.
