After 10 plus years as a MA, Im at a crossroads.

I've spent over 10 plus years as a Medical Assistant. AMA. I want to attend nursing school to get my bachelor's to further my education and career. But, now I feel burnt out and thinking about a career change.

I enjoy taking care of my patients, being a team player to my colleagues and physicians. But, I'm experiencing burnout and I'm not sure if I want to continue in the healthcare field. I love to be a RN, but I'll be in the same cycle with the same feelings. I'm not sure if I want go in tech or something different. I really need advice and encouragement.

I've been feeling this way since Covid after returning to back to the clinic and having to work short staff. #asklemon8 #lemon8contest #careeradvice #nursing #educationmajor

Read moreAfter dedicating over a decade as a Medical Assistant, it’s completely natural to feel at a crossroads, especially if you’re experiencing burnout amplified by pandemic-related staffing shortages. Burnout in healthcare professionals has become a significant issue since Covid, often leading to doubts about continuing in the same field or pursuing further education such as nursing school. Many Medical Assistants who consider becoming Registered Nurses face intense workloads and emotional stress that can perpetuate feelings of fatigue and dissatisfaction despite career advancement. If you love caring for patients and working as part of a healthcare team but worry about repeating the same cycle of burnout with nursing, it might be helpful to explore strategies to manage stress and maintain work-life balance as you study and work. This could include setting boundaries, seeking support groups, or part-time study options. Alternatively, branching into tech-related roles within healthcare, such as health informatics, medical coding, or healthcare technology systems management, might provide a fresh start while still leveraging your healthcare experience. Roles in this sector often offer different work environments and challenges, possibly reducing emotional exhaustion. Consider speaking with career counselors or professionals who have transitioned out of clinical roles to gather insights on alternative industries. Continuing education programs often provide career counseling services that can help clarify your path. Ultimately, it’s crucial to listen to your own needs and mental health signals. Career changes can be daunting, but prioritizing your well-being and long-term satisfaction is vital. Remember, seeking advice and encouragement, as you are doing, is a strong first step towards making informed and fulfilling decisions about your future.
