Mixed Native <3

... Read moreHey everyone, I'm so glad you're here to dive deeper into what it truly means when you're a mixed native. My earlier post just touched the surface, but there's so much more to unpack about this journey. It’s not always straightforward, but it’s undeniably beautiful and complex. Growing up with a dad who's a White Latino and a mom who was Dinè (Navajo) meant my world was always a vibrant blend of cultures, stories, and traditions. I remember moments feeling like I stood right in the middle, sometimes wondering where I truly belonged. It's a common feeling, I think, for many of us who are native mixed with white – sometimes too Indigenous for one group, and not Indigenous enough for another. For me, connecting with my Dinè heritage has been a lifelong process. Even though my mom passed, her spirit and teachings continue to guide me. I've learned about the importance of our ancestral lands, the strength of our community, and the beauty of our language. It's not just about blood quantum; it's about connection, respect, and carrying on traditions. On my dad's side, embracing our Latino roots adds another rich layer to my identity – the food, the music, the warmth of family gatherings. It truly expands my understanding of the world. There's also the term '#whitewashednative,' which sometimes pops up. It's a heavy one, and something many of us grapple with. It can feel like others are questioning your authenticity or your right to claim your heritage because you might not 'look' a certain way or have had a specific upbringing. For me, it's about defining my own path and understanding that my experience is valid. My dad, despite being 'White Latino technically,' actually gets darker than me now in the summer, which always makes us laugh! It just goes to show how diverse our backgrounds can be, and how appearances don't tell the whole story. Navigating life as a mixed native with white heritage means learning to embrace all parts of myself. It's about finding pride in the unique blend that makes me, me. It also means sometimes having to explain your background, or correct assumptions people make. I've learned to see these moments not as burdens, but as opportunities to share my story and foster understanding. My parents’ divorce, while challenging, also taught me resilience and how to build connections with both sides of my family independently, reinforcing my dual identity even more strongly. For those of you out there who are also native mixed with white, or any mixed heritage, my biggest advice is to lean into who you are. Seek out stories, connect with elders, read books, or simply spend time reflecting on your own unique heritage. There's so much strength in diversity, and your mixed background isn't a weakness; it's a superpower. It gives you a broader perspective and a deeper appreciation for the different ways people live and connect. So, let your unique light shine brightly!
