As a busy parent, I'm always on the hunt for engaging and meaningful books for my kids, especially around the holidays. Thanksgiving is such a special time to teach gratitude and share stories, and finding the right books can really make story time shine! I recently picked up The Crayons Give Thanks by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, and let me tell you, it's been a huge hit in our house. My little ones adore the D.O.T. (Daywalt, Oliver, Team) books, and this one doesn't disappoint. It’s not just about Thanksgiving; it’s a wonderful way to introduce the concept of gratitude through the beloved crayon characters. We had so much fun talking about what we are thankful for after reading it – it really sparked some sweet conversations! But that's not the only gem we've found. Another fantastic read that often gets overlooked is Construction Site: A Thankful Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker. If your kids are into trucks and diggers like mine are, this book is a must-have. It beautifully weaves the theme of thankfulness into a familiar and exciting world. It’s perfect for winding down before bed, reminding us all of the simple things to appreciate, even for our hard-working construction vehicles! I recall seeing it as a board book, which is great for little hands. And for a bit of playful holiday fun, we absolutely love How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace. This book is hilarious and full of adventure! My kids always giggle trying to figure out how the students are going to catch that clever turkey. It’s a great way to bring some lightness and laughter into your Thanksgiving preparations, and it often leads to us trying to draw our own 'turkey traps' afterward. The illustrations are so vibrant and engaging – definitely a favorite for keeping active minds entertained. For the younger crowd, Let's Be Thankful (Paw Patrol) is a winner. My toddler is obsessed with Paw Patrol, so anything with Ryder and the pups is an instant win. It's a simple, straightforward story about gratitude that even the littlest learners can grasp. Similarly, You're My Little Cutie Pie and You're the Apple of My Pie are just adorable board books that are perfect for expressing affection and the joy of family during this time. They are sweet, gentle reads that reinforce feelings of love and connection. Finally, you can never go wrong with Eric Carle! His Little Book of Thanks from Brown Bear and Friends is beautiful and simple, perfect for introducing gratitude to toddlers with familiar characters. And Happy Thanksgiving, Biscuit! is another classic for young readers who love Biscuit the dog. These books are fantastic for building early literacy skills while also instilling values of thankfulness. When I’m looking for these books, I usually check our local library first – it’s a treasure trove! But if I want to own them, I've had great luck finding them at Target, on Amazon, or supporting local bookstores. Reading together during Thanksgiving has become one of our cherished family traditions. It's not just about the stories, but the cozy moments and conversations they inspire. These books truly help set a grateful and joyful tone for the holiday season!
