Every where we stayed on our road trip through the UK with 2 adults & 2 toddlers! #uktrip #roadtripwithtoddlers #scotlandroadtrip #travelfamily #travelrecommendations
Navigating a UK road trip with two energetic toddlers was certainly an adventure! Finding the right places to stay made all the difference, prioritizing convenience, reliability, and family-friendly features like easy parking, flexible check-ins, and good accessibility. Here’s what we learned from our own journey across the UK, from London to Edinburgh, focusing on the parent brands and types of stays that truly delivered. Top Hotel Brands & Stays for Families with Toddlers: Hilton & DoubleTree by Hilton (e.g., DoubleTree by Hilton London Kensington, Hilton Edinburgh Carlton): Why we recommend them: These brands offer consistent reliability and comfort. Our DoubleTree stay in London Kensington, near the Natural History Museum, was fantastic for its location and decent room size, providing comfort and cleanliness. The Hilton Edinburgh Carlton was a highlight – massive rooms with king beds, incredibly helpful staff, and an excellent location between the Old and New Town. They typically excel in amenities and are accommodating to families. Considerations: Parking can be a challenge in central city locations like London or Edinburgh; always check specific arrangements beforehand. Accessibility within the hotels is usually good, with lifts and spacious common areas. Holiday Inn Express (e.g., Holiday Inn Express Birmingham): Why we recommend them: For a budget-friendly option, Holiday Inn Express can be a lifesaver. Our Birmingham stay, while basic, stood out because the staff were incredibly kind to our children, even providing goody bags. They offer reliable, clean, and comfortable basics, often with complimentary breakfast. Considerations: Rooms can be small, as we experienced in Birmingham. While convenient and usually offering parking (especially outside city centers), don’t expect extensive amenities. Best for efficient overnight stays. Staycity Aparthotel (e.g., Staycity Aparthotel Manchester): Why we recommend them: Aparthotels are brilliant for families! Our Staycity Aparthotel in Manchester was massive, offering plenty of space. Having a full kitchen, a washer, and separate living areas felt like a home away from home. The location right above the train station was super convenient for exploring. Cooking meals and doing laundry significantly reduces stress and costs. Considerations: Check specific locations for noise levels if you're above a busy transport hub. Parking might be off-site or require a separate fee. Airbnbs (e.g., Bath Townhouse, The Shoreline Cottage Sunderland): Why we recommend them: Airbnbs offer unique charm and incredible practical advantages. Our Bath townhouse provided free parking and a washing machine – absolute essentials! The Shoreline Cottage in Sunderland was clean, comfortable, and walkable to the beach. They often provide more space, multiple bedrooms, and full kitchens, ideal for families who need room to spread out and prefer self-catering. Considerations: Consistency varies widely. We learned to scrutinize listings for family-specific details. Automatic doors at the Sunderland cottage, for example, were a bit of a hassle with curious toddlers. Always check for stairs, childproofing, and parking specifics. Flexible check-in can be easier with key boxes, but sometimes requires coordination with hosts. General Tips for Stress-Free UK Road Trip Stays with Toddlers: Prioritize Parking: Always confirm availability and cost before you book, especially in cities like London, Manchester, or Edinburgh. Many city hotels offer valet or partner with nearby garages. Check Accessibility: Think about stroller access, lifts, enough space for a travel cot, and easy access to public transport if you're not driving everywhere. Essential Amenities: A washing machine (like at our Bath Airbnb or Staycity) is a game-changer for road trips with messy toddlers! Kitchenettes or full kitchens are invaluable. Don't forget to ask if high chairs or cribs are available. Location, Location, Location: Consider proximity to parks, playgrounds, and family-friendly attractions. Being able to walk to a local pub or cafe after the kids are asleep is a bonus! For a city like London, staying near iconic landmarks like Big Ben or major museums can save valuable travel time. Flexible Check-ins: Road trips can be unpredictable. Hotels often have standard check-in times, but some offer early check-in for a fee or upon request. Airbnbs with keyless entry can be very convenient. By keeping these points in mind, you can significantly enhance your UK road trip experience, ensuring comfortable, convenient, and memorable stays for your whole family!
